Free your senses and spirit of exploration by visiting one of the most beautiful 19th century mansions in the Historic Center of Mérida, home to the Fundación de Artistas (artists’ foundation). This wonderful place, just a few steps from Santa Lucia park, opens its doors to exhibitions and cultural activities by local, national, and international creators. Visit its rooms, corridors, interior garden and much more, while enjoying a delicious coffee.
The Fundación de Artistas is a restored space especially designed to promote artistic expression. The large, restored rooms of this mansion were designed and restored in detail to house sculptural works, installations, paintings, even live piano concerts. Don´t miss out photographing the spectacular pasta tile floors, they are beautiful. Take the time to appreciate each of the spaces; the house itself is also a visual delight. “An ideal place to have a coffee, sit down to read a book, and enjoy the music and the traveling exhibitions,” says a visitor (FourSquare).
The Fundación de Artistas began in 2015 as an initiative of its founders, the creators and owners of Coqui Coqui and Hacienda Montecristo, residents in the Peninsula for more than 10 years. They wanted to offer a collaborative cultural space for activities and events, but at the same time inspire and support artistic training. Thus emerged a non-profit organization that seeks to support new emerging artists and those who already have a longer history, showing art from all latitudes and becoming a true cultural space in the Yucatán Peninsula.
Under this scheme they have training and residence programs for visual and pictorial artists, as well as seminars and other activities including the recent alliance with the Fundación Haciendas del Mundo Maya (Maya world haciendas’ foundation), with training seminars for local artisans to help them create new pieces and then display them in this center.
In the past they have combined the work of recognized artists with pieces by emerging artists, in such a way as to provide space for young people in the peninsula with talent who wish to submit their work. A visit to this innovative space will provide you with a feast of art in a highly inspiring setting!
