Can you imagine learning how to play the Javanese “gamelan”, or the “Karinding Towel gaya Asep Nata” (Indonesian bamboo mouth harp)? Or maybe learn how to create the ancestral Indonesian technique of batik? Maybe you never thought about it, but now it’s a possibility. This summer the first edition of the “Festival de Música Tradicional en la Contemporaneidad” (traditional music of today) will take place under the name “Entre Ayer y Hoy” (between yesterday and today).
With the objective of getting to know more about other cultures of the world, in this first edition the guest country is Indonesia. There will be musical presentations by the Java Central gamelan orchestra “Nyi Asep Mangsah” and the traditional shadow theater of Java Central “Wayang Kulit” performed by the group “Indra Swara-Arte Indonesio”. There will also be workshops, exhibitions, videos, and a series of traditional and contemporary music concerts inspired by world music. And because the event is the union between cultures and countries, it will also showcase some “Jarocha” music concerts, Yucatecan songs, guided visits of the Museo de la Música Mexicana in Mérida, and many more activities.
The Festival will be from Sunday July 24 to Sunday August 14, with events to be held in different places such as Centro Cultural Olimpo, UADY main building, and Yucatecan school of trova and folk music “Juan Acereto”, among others.
Tickets will be available at Fundación UADY, Monday – Friday, 9 am – 5 pm, with discounts for students, and some events will be free. There will be events for the whole family! Check out the program on Facebook: Entre Ayer y Hoy. Enjoy!
