The word Tunich comes from Maya and it means “stone.” This term was adopted as the name for “La Feria Artesanal Tunich” – the Tunich Artisanal Fair.

This event promotes cultural and economic exchange in Dzityá, a Comisaría that is well-known for being the birthplace of many generations of artisans. These artists are dedicated to conserving and promoting part of their identity and heritage through the creation of pieces, mainly in stone and wood.

From the very first generations of artisans that carved using chisels and hammers, the stone and wood objects produced in this area have obtained both local and international recognition.

This year, the event couldn’t take place in its traditional location. This is why the Ayuntamiento de Mérida through the Dirección de Desarrollo Económico y Turismo is proud to present the Feria Artesanal Tunich in a virtual setting. This event looks to generate possibilities for economic development to the artisanal sector, whose members have been financially affected during the past months.

The Feria Artesanal Tunich 2020 will take place from December 13-20 through a digital platform so that you can get to know the artisans, purchase their products, and fall in love with their work.

Join us and be a part of the economic reactivation of our local artisans. This migration to a digital platform is an important but necessary step for many people, but by participating, you help this transition be worthwhile for artisans and their families.
