Dutzi Design Inc. is committed to great design, quality products, and helping the people of Yucatán.

The Dutzi handbag workshop in Valladolid was created in 2009, and their bags are also available in Mérida at Coqui Coqui Boutique.

All bags are designed by the founder of Dutzi Design, Ariane Dutzi, and handcrafted by Maya women and men. The bags are made out of recycled vintage burlap or recycled white raffia. The Maya culture and its importance to family values are very important to Ariane.

The men and women working for Dutzi Design need only to come to the workshop for training, to pick up the materials, and deliver the finished, handcrafted bags. The craftsmen and craftswomen are paid for each bag they make, which gives them the freedom to work from home while caring for their families. They manage their own time, and are provided with training to learn not only how to make the bags, but the values of consistent quality and on-time delivery. There are about 20 people working on the handbags at any given time.

Your purchase will give more work to more indigenous people, some of whom have limited formal education, and enable them not only to provide for their families, but also to strengthen the community they live and work in.

Founder Ariane Dutzi is a former fashion editor who has lived and worked in Paris and New York. She shares her Valladolid home and workshop with two Jack Russel terriers, Luna and Cinza. She is an idealist who believes in beauty, making the world a better place, and that business is about more than just making money. She has faced many obstacles in establishing the workshop, but feels that it has all been worth it.
