Picture yourself dancing under the full moon to the rhythm of three incredible jazz bands while the ocean waves chime in. All this and more await you on Saturday, February 8 at the 11th edition of the Full Moon Jazz Festival.
This event began as a small gathering of 80 snowbirds and a single music ensemble. Today, it involves 650 attendees, three bands, four restaurants, and a bar – definitely the social and musical event of the winter season!
Ever since its first edition back in 2008, Full Moon Jazz’s goal has been to support Telchac Education, a non-profit organization that aims to fight poverty in Telchac Puerto by providing academic opportunities in the community. Telchac Education started out buying uniforms and school supplies, yet, with time, and thanks to your support, it has been able to watch their scholarship recipients grow into university students.
This year, the event will showcase three bands to get your jazz on: Groove Ministry from Mérida, Big Beat Band from Canada, and the main act, Mérida Big Band. Plus, there will be a dance floor covering the pool in front of the stage, making sure you have a place to dance all night long.
Surely after all that fun, hunger will be inevitable! There will be four restaurants available offering a varied menu such as: Thai food and cheese boards, as well as more traditional dishes such as Tacos al Pastor or burgers. The bar will also be stocked and will provide a selection of soft drinks, beers, wines, and spirits, as well as the famous Carajillos (espresso coffee with Licor 43). For those with a sweet tooth, there will be delectable brownies and Alfajores from Tía Chuka – Repostería Fina.
Tickets are already on sale and available at different selling points in Mérida, Progreso, Chicxulub, and Chelem at $400 pesos. The day of the event, you’ll be able to purchase tickets at the door for $450 pesos.
If you’re worried about driving, we’ve got that covered! There will be transportation available departing from Mérida for $150 pesos round trip, and from Progreso via Chicxulub for $120 pesos with paid reservation (book at the Arcadia offices in Mérida or at Yucatán Vacations in Progreso). This way you can travel in a comfortable and safe way.
Remember to head directly towards the event’s bank the day of to purchase your tickets. These will be useful to buy food, drinks, and of course, your commemorative t-shirt. Once you have tickets, you won’t need cash.
100% of the funds are assigned to monthly university scholarships that range from $1,000 – $2,500 pesos per student, depending on what year they’re in. This year, 10 students are being supported by Telchac Education! They are counting on your help to keep on growing. In August, four more students graduate high school and will move onto higher education.
It’s a fact that none of these young people would be able to attend college if it wasn’t for the scholarships given by Telchac Education. As of now, this includes six graduates: two teachers, one nutritionist, one administrator, one nurse, and a beautician – six success stories from Telchac Puerto.
