Legend has it that during the colonization of the New World, Franciscan monks from Spain, together with the Maya on the Yucatán Peninsula, gathered tropical flowers, spices, woods and exotic herbs and sent them back to Spain for Queen Isabel.
So many spices were found that the monks created a catalogue, giving rise to the most original eau de cologne, emulsion and lotion formulas as well as the famous perfumes prepared with a mixture of the essential oils of the Yucatán flora.
For almost 300 years these prized products perfumed the Great Spanish Empire. When the 1847 Caste War began in Valladolid, the typical perfume of this area was lost.
Fast-forward 160 years. Nicolas Malleville, a contemporary Argentinian landscape architect and perfumer, while doing research in London and Paris libraries, discovered the history of these Yucatecan flora and scents. Captivated by the stories and legends of the antique perfumes, perfumer Nicolas bought a plane ticket to Yucatán and set out to rescue and recreate the scents and aromas so savored by the Spanish royalty. His years of research took him to Valladolid, where he set up his laboratory and set about recreating the ancient aromas.
In Coqui Coqui, his perfumery and small lab in Valladolid, he uses the raw materials the Spanish monks once used to recreate the distinct aromas they created. He also has a store in Mérida.
These raw materials include chamomile, vanilla, lemon, lavender, aloe, mint, coconut, agave, tropical woods, eucalyptus, orange, citronella, cacao, and jasmine.
Stop by Coqui Coqui on Calazada de Frailes Street in Valladolid, or on Calle 55 in Mérida, to investigate, try on and savor the different eau de perfumes, eau de colognes, linen sprays, Maya clays, butter emulsions, hand and body lotions, massage essential oils, bath oils, face creams, bath foams and scented candles that he has created. All Coqui Coqui products are made from natural essential oils from Yucatán.
From the perfume business sprouted two well-being related businesses: guesthouse residences and spas. The residence/spasin Valladolid, Izamal, Mérida and in the jungle of Coba, radiate the well-being, peace, and tranquility associated with the scents produced by Coqui Coqui. In the Valladolid residences you will find the more earthy agave and plumeria aromas. The residence/guesthouse in the jungle of Coba features vanilla and aloe.
