Who doesn’t know the story of Cinderella? An evil stepmother and two cruel stepsisters torment and exploit a poor, sweet girl who, thanks to a kind fairy godmother, overcomes them all and finds her prince charming. The story has been recreated since then in literature, dance, theater, animation, movies, and television. Rossini’s Opera Buffa presents a variation on the theme: a stepfather takes the place of the stepmother, and the fairy godmother is a man.
In this performance, the stepsisters who make life impossible for the gentle Cinderella will be represented by the charismatic and talented sopranos Irasema Terrazas and Yucatecan Claudia Rodríguez. For the role of Angelina, the Cinderella, we welcome back the virtuosa mezzosoprano Gabriela Thierry, who we remember for her brilliant interpretation of Rossina in The Barber of Seville; and the tenor Oscar de la Torre, who will play the prince.
La Cenerentola (Cinderella, or Goodness Triumphant, 1817) is an operatic dramma giocoso in two acts by Gioachino Rossini. The libretto was written by Jacopo Ferretti, based on the fairy tale Cendrillon by Charles Perrault. Considered one of the best works for voice, it was composed by Rossini in just three weeks at the age of 25.
