As I walked through the terrace at Avec Amour, I couldn’t help but wonder…how do I bottle a little bit of Avec Amour and take it home?

This charming French-Mexican bistro is located on the corner of Santa Lucía Park, right in the heart of Mérida’s historic downtown. It features details of the French architecture we love so much in old Casonas located in Centro and is surrounded by the tranquility of the park, as well as the greenery and the sporadic chirping of birds. It’s you, your friends, family, or partner, and the conversation.

For a second you forget where you are. Add in the welcoming service and the last thing you’ll want to do is head back home.

Shortly after my visit, to my pleasant surprise, I had the opportunity to venture back to Avec Amour. On that occasion, I met the minds behind this culinary project: a French-Mexican couple who decided to fuse the best of both worlds.

“It’s not classic French cuisine; we give it a Mexican touch by taking advantage of the seasonal ingredients,” they told me. Yes, seasonal. Avec Amour (“with love” in French) changes its menu twice a year, incorporating brand new dishes. The “fusion” means that you won’t find them in any other Mexican or French restaurants. That’s why I highly recommend you run to try their dishes more than once, maybe even three times. Each dish is more than exquisite!

Avec Amour also offers special dishes and menus for important holidays, for example, Christmas and New Year’s Eve. In addition, throughout the month of January, they will have a French Rosca de Reyes: Frangipane (puff pastry filled with almond cream).

Will you take a suggestion?

Try the New York-style steak, which comes with homemade chocolate Mole and mashed potato with Papantla vanilla. Another outstanding option is an iconic French dish: beef stew in red wine, with local beef from Tizimín. And for dessert? Mezcal Crème Brûlée.

If you’re having breakfast (or brunch), consider the Croque Mex. It’s made with Spanish ham, three-cheese sauce au gratin, avocado, beans, chipotle mayonnaise, and artisan bread. Accompany it with a redberry drink! After over a month, these dishes still live in my dreams.
