The U.S. Consulate General has long history in the region. The first consul of the United States in Mérida was appointed in 1843, in response to the Government of Mexico’s decision to open the ports of Sisal and Campeche to free trade. The Consulate was transferred to Progreso in 1897, where it remained until 1934, when it was again moved to Mérida. In 2012, the Consulate was named a Consulate General, reflecting the mission’s growth and expanded responsibilities. Our area of operations is comprised of the three states of the Yucatan Peninsula: Yucatan, Campeche, and Quintana Roo.
Although the Consulate’s mission has evolved over the years, our first priority continues to be the provision of services to American citizens. In addition to the Consulate in Mérida, we have three consular agencies, in Cancun, Cozumel, and Playa del Carmen. All of our offices provide passport and notarial services, as well as assisting Americans in crisis, from arrests to hospitalizations and deaths. The Consulate is the only office to provide visa services.
For citizenship services, it is always best to contact the office you will visit in advance when possible, since making an appointment will allow us to serve you more quickly. In case of emergency, we have staff from each office on duty 24 hours a day every day of the year. Our website, has more information about U.S. Government issues ranging from passports to voting, taxes and Social Security.
Another important function of the Consulate is visa services. Our Applicant Service Center is the first stop in the visa application process. For applicants renewing a recently expired visa, it is often not necessary to go to the Consulate for an interview. For those who need an interview, the wait time continues to be under a week. Applicants receive their approved visas via courier service within three to four weeks, and often less.
How to apply for a visa
