MicheleThe Artist Studio Tour offers a rare glimpse inside private studios of artists in the forefront of Mérida’s burgeoning art scene. There are new gallery openings almost monthly and on Noche Blanca the entire city pulsates with a celebration of art. But, behind the scenes, in the privacy of their studios, artists paint and create in solitude. The Artist Studio Tour is the one day a year that artists around the city open their studios to the public and allow us into their creative worlds.

The Artist Studio Tour is on February 21, 2015 from 10 am to 3 pm.

This unique self-guided tour is a yearly fundraiser for the Merida English Library and gives important exposure to local, national and international artists living and working in Mérida. Many of our 24 artists are represented in galleries and museums around the world, but the MEL Artist Studio Tour is the only time their studios are open to the public. The Artist Studio Tour allows you to spend quality time discussing the creative process with each artist, and if the mood strikes, you can pick up a piece for your home. You’ll find sculptors, painters, printmakers, photographers, papermakers and more in this talented group.

Most of the studios are in Centro and are easily accessible on foot. A few of the studios are further out, but well worth the effort to get there. Mexican legend, Emilio Torre Gamboa, and his grandson, Jorge Espinosa Torre, share a studio in Buenavista. Sculptor Alejandro Farias is best known for his large stelae at the Animaya zoo. Painter Viviana Hinojosa is also a children’s book illustrator and to step inside her studio is to enter a magical, whimsical world.

Due to the small space of some of the studios, only a limited number of tickets will be sold. Advance purchase tickets are 200 pesos and on the day of the event, tickets will be 250 pesos. Tickets are on sale at Soho Galleries, Calle 60 #400A x 43 y 41, Centro, and the Merida English Library, Calle 53 #524 x 66 y 68, Centro, from 9 am to 1 pm Monday through Saturday.
