Bus Lines and Taxis

Mexico has a wonderful intercity bus system. Most buses that travel between popular tourist destinations are clean, modern and well-maintained. Some first class buses are air-conditioned, have bathrooms and even a snack bar. Between smaller towns, if you are adventurous, you can also take a combi, a car or van maintained and dispatched by a collective. Combis are often crowded and without air conditioning, but they can take you to almost any little pueblo in the Yucatan. The buses that travel between destinations within the city range from new and clean to very old and belching fumes. Buses are almost always the cheapest way to get to any destination in the Yucatan. For a bus that will take you to the most important tourist destinations within the Merida city limits, try the Turibus.

In Merida
In order to visit all the points of interest on the Prolongation Montejo, hop on bus 52, Norte, Ruta 2. The point of departure is on Calle 59, between Calle 58 and 56. This bus then continues up on Calle 56 before getting on to Prolongation Montejo. If you take Ruta 1, you will end up a little east of the Prolongation Montejo. It turns left at the Monument de la Patria and goes along Campo Deportivo.

To get to Sam's, Liverpool, Carrefour or the Grand Plaza Mall, take the buses going north on Calle 60. Check out the destination name on the front window, and hop on at the stop at Parque Santa Lucia or further north at Parque Santa Ana.

If Plaza Fiesta and the areas before it are of interest, take the busses leaving at Calle 59, between 56 and 58. Look for the names of San Lucas or Felipe Carrillo on the front windows. Most of these buses will also mention the Plaza Fiesta mall as well.

When you want to get off of a bus, call out, "Baja," (bah-ha) which means lower, or in this case getting down, and the driver will stop to let you off.

Outside Merida
Most of the areas around Merida are reachable by bus. To go to Progreso, take the bus at the Progreso Terminal, at Calle 62, between 65 and 67. This bus travels north on Calle 64 stops for passengers further up on this street.

The ruins of Dzibichaltun can be reached by the bus for Chablecal, at Autocentro on Calle 62, between Calle 67 and 69, with several departures per day.

You can travel to Izamal by catching a bus at the station located on the corner of Calle 69 and 68.

The ADO bus company has a great package deal for visiting Campeche. For $1,165 pesos (about 100 US) you get roundtrip bus fare, and two nights in a 4-star hotel. This is the perfect way to discover the history, culture, archaeology, adventure and fun of Campeche. The bus ride takes only two hours from Merida. For reservations call 01 800 800 0364.

Ticul and other towns south of Merida can be reached by combi and bus from Parque San Juan, Calle 64 between 67 and 69. Some buses are direct and some go through many interesting villages. Check out all the interesting destinations on these buses and go!

Celestun, Hunucma, and other villages east of Merida can be reached by buses from the station on Calle 71 between 64 and 66.

Uxmal and Chichen Itza can be reached by regular buses, from the Terminal Segunda Clase on Calle 71, between 69 and 70.

Busing in the Yucatan is safe, inexpensive and a great way to meet the locals.
Good luck and have fun.

Arriving to Cancun and want to get to Merida?
How to get to Merida from Cancun: If you are renting a car you do not have to worry since all the car rentals are at Cancun International Airport (CUN). Checking our Yucatan map to get a general idea of your driving to Merida that should take about 4. We do recommend taking the highway one way to save time if you wish and the freeway back to be able to go through all the villages and take a glimpse of what Mayans are really like these days.
If you are taking the bus to Merida it all starts when you leave the airpor in Cancun and walk all the way to the right end where you take a bus for $30 pesos ($3 usd) into the downtown bus station. This bus runs every 30 minutes and takes about 30 minutes. Once you are at the bus station in downtown Cancun we do recommend if your budget allows it, to take UNO, that is the luxury bus for $370 ($35usd), very comfortable althought they have a strong tendency to put the AC too cold. The next in budget would be ADO GL (runs every hour to and from Merida) for $260 pesos ($25usd). After those there are plenty of buses coming and going all the time so if its not high season you do not need reservations... if it is high season try buying your tickets online:

Schedule for UNO Merida-Cancun: 7:15 am, 7:45 am, 2:15 pm, 4:15 pm, 9:15 pm
