La RecovaApril, 2012

Each month Yucatan Today visits a restaurant in order to describe what it has to offer. This is not a review; it is a summary of the menu, service, ambience, and opening hours.

After five years serving some of the very best steaks and seafood in Mérida, La Recova is as popular as ever and is busy every night. Locals know that the quality of the food is consistently high, the service is excellent, and the ambience perfect. La Recova has a high proportion of repeat customers, and one visit will tell you why.

La Recova’s Argentinean-style menu is comprehensive, and the chef and his team prepare inspired, original, contemporary cuisine, accompanied by any of an excellent variety of national and international wines by the bottle or glass. They pride themselves on the quality of the meat and the freshness of the seafood. Some unique appetizers include lobster taquitos, tuna or duck “carnitas,” and various tartares, sashimis, and carpaccios. There are Argentinean chorizos and empanadas, as well as salads and soups, including asparagus cream soup. Poultry main courses include a duck confit, and seafood options include wild Alaskan salmon and grilled octopus. The pasta dishes are made with fresh pasta; and for steak lovers, La Recova is one of your best options in the city. They use only Angus prime steaks, ranging from 300 grams to 600 grams. Served hot off the grill, the meat is tender, juicy, and cooked to perfection. For a special treat, La Recova also offers Akaushi beef, a healthy, highly marbled Japanese beef. The splendid dessert menu will tempt you with crème brûlée, chocolate tornado (imagine a chocolate brownie with a liquid chocolate center, served on a bed of Bailey’s with coffee ice cream), and the house special with bananas, vanilla wafers, and cream of banana. And more.

Frequent diners at La Recova appreciate the high standards of service overseen by Operating Manager Valente Anzaldo. He knows many of the customers by name, and the waiters do too. He is full of energy and is very proud of La Recova’s excellent reputation. “My regular customers call me personally on my cell phone when they want a table,” he says. “I like to know they are coming so I can greet them personally.” His extensive restaurant management career is evident in all the details at La Recova, and he is proud to mention that they have recently opened a second branch in McAllen, Texas. And during Mérida vacations, you can enjoy La Recova at the beach.

The ambience is busy, contemporary, and comfortable. There is a bar, a dining room, and a terrace for dining under the stars. The restaurant attracts the late night dinner crowd, business people, families, and visitors who are looking for a memorable lunch or dinner with delicious food and everything else which goes along with it. No wonder their slogan is “Por Puro Placer” (for pure pleasure)!

The restaurant opens for lunch every day at 1 pm. Closing time? “When the last guests have asked for their bill,” says Valente. “We go home after you go home.”
