If your exploration of Merida’s Centro Histórico takes you to the “barrio” (neighborhood) of La Mejorada, make sure to drop in to El Templo for lunch or dinner, or late-night drinks and snacks. This popular restaurant-bar has been serving delicious home-cooked food at reasonable prices since 2007.
The setting is upbeat and casual, and its informal ambience is popular with visitors, local students, and anyone who likes consistently good food in a relaxed setting. The wall behind the bar is filled with black and white photos of famous faces, including musicians, movie stars, presidents, dictators, and other icons of history; and there are some entertaining, offbeat murals on the other walls, too. With a lunch menu that changes every day, many of its customers eat there several times a week.
The daily lunch special, with a fixed price, consists of several main dishes to choose from, along with a selection of side dishes. The food is freshly prepared each day, with a changing menu; the meals are balanced and the servings are ample. The daily lunch special is served from 12 noon to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday.
Some of the choices you may see on the daily lunch special include chicken in pepper sauce, stuffed crepes, Thai curry, lasagne, chicken strudel, chicken stuffed with spinach, and BBQ pork ribs. Yucatecan specialties include pork loin Valladolid-style, poc-chuc, pollo pibil, chicken with cilantro sauce, and chicken with chile xcatic. Mexican specialties include discada norteña, chicken in green sauce with nopal, chicken with ajillo chile and mushrooms, chicken a la Veracruzana, chicken stew in beer, and chiles rellenos.
Dinner and snacks are served Monday-Saturday from 7 pm to 3 am. The snack menu includes Tlayuda (Oaxaca pizza-style dish served on a crispy tortilla with beans, chorizo, cheese, and avocado, perfect for sharing), nachos, wings, french fries, guacamole, grilled chistorra sausage, chicken taquitos, stuffed mushrooms, and delicious mushrooms with ajillo chile sauce. Popular dinner choices include tuna steak, chicken in chile de arbol sauce, burgers, bagel sandwiches, and fajitas.
El Templo is owned and operated by a Yucatecan couple, Nidia and Gabriel, who love what they do and always take time to greet their customers. Gabriel is the chef, and always includes fresh and local ingredients in his recipes, and fresh, local fruits and vegetables in season.
El Templo also offers a wide variety of cocktails, individually or by the pitcher, buckets of beer, and non-alcoholic beverages. There are Happy Hour specials every day, including drink specials, and also combinations of beer buckets with snacks, ideal for sharing with a group of friends.
If you want to eat and drink where the locals do, with home-cooked food at reasonable prices, this is the place to go!
