Acqua Web

Each month Yucatan Today visits a restaurant in order to describe what it has to offer. This is not a review; it is a summary of the menu, service, ambience, prices, and opening hours.

October 2010

The name says it all. “Cocina Creativa”…and a creative kitchen it most definitely is. Mérida diners agree…this place is busy near the end of the week, especially after 9 pm.

Since the restaurant opened a few years ago, the chefs have been delighting their customers with inventive, delicious cuisine for “aficionados” of fine food. The combination of ingredients…the combination of textures…the combination of flavors…and the visual appeal all have a fine balance at Acqua.

Each menu item is described in simple language but with enough information so you can visualize the plate…and written with enough temptation to make you desire it. The menu includes appetizers, fondues, lower-calorie choices, salads, pastas and paninis. There are also two feature sections: monthly specialties and chef’s suggestions. We would love to include the whole menu here, but will limit ourselves to describing just one item from each section of the menu.

Appetizer: this is truly amazing…brie wrapped in puff pastry and baked in the oven…served with a homemade tomato jam which is a secret family recipe. There are also beef, eggplant, artichokes, tuna, and shrimp appetizers, and more.

Fondues: the friendship classic…the options include Swiss, brie, or gorgonzola, with herbs, chipotle, and mushrooms as additional ingredients to choose from.

Low calorie options: no need to deprive yourself…how about grilled veal filet with asparagus and vegetable lasagne. Beef filet, cod, and salmon are available too.

Salads: a difficult decision…the Acqua salad has spinach, goat cheese, balsamic candied nuts, and house vinaigrette. There are three other equally yummy salads to choose from.

Pastas: something for everyone…pesto, gorgonzola, and salmon. The decadent gnocchi with four cheeses includes mozzarella, cream cheese, roquefort, and parmesan.

Paninis: various meat and veggie options…the Deli panini has brie, prosciutto, ham, tomato jam, and lettuce.

Specialties this month include chicken, duck, tuna, salmon, veal, and more. The green Thai curry is made with beef, shrimp and chicken in a spicy green curry sauce served with veggies and Jasmine rice.

Chef suggestions range from chicken stuffed with brie and serrano to a Med salad; from beef carpaccio to Thai fettucini. But one of the most irresistible choices is the flaky gorgonzola tart topped with candied nuts, onion, and caramelized apple. And if you love duck, try the sliced breast of duck topped with balsamic glazed figs, accompanied by a delicate, flavorful rice souffle and bacon asparagus.

But what about dessert? They are works of art for the eyes and the taste buds. Apple tart, chocolate brownie, cheesecake, carrot cake, streusel, and for the romantic diners…chocolate fondue.

The decor is simple, modern, and comfortable. The service is a perfect combination of attentive and discreet. The waiters are polite and accommodating. The wine list is not long but it includes some excellent rosés, sparkling, whites and reds, from Mexico, France, Australia, Chile, Spain, Italy, and Argentina.

Acqua Cocina Creativa offers elegance and taste and is excellent value. They also offer executive menus, and home delivery for salads, paninis and wraps.
