“The essence of the beautiful is unity in variety”.
Felix Mendelssohn, 1809-1847
In his short life, German composer Felix Mendelssohn not only produced a vast musical legacy, but as grandson of philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, he left us with some excellent food for thought. His quotation is our inspiration this month, as we present you with a wonderfully varied collection of new articles.
Our beautiful cover photo of the chapel at Hacienda Santa Cruz was taken by Enrique Osorno, his second cover photo in recent months. You can read about this lovely, popular hacienda here. Izamal is also on our radar screen this month, with the annual celebration of “Mamá Linda,” the Virgin of Izamal. Read about it on our online version or after November 25, and put it on your calendar (December 7 – 8). Another destination to keep in mind is Oxkutzcab, for the annual Orange Fair (December 1 – 11). This agricultural event is lots of fun; the story is on our online version or after November 28.
Two events you’ll want to plan to attend are the AANY homemade art show (December 2 – 4; the story is on our online version or after November 23) and the family-oriented Feria Yucatán (it began on November 11 and continues until December 4; you can read about it here).
We have not forgotten about your taste buds! If you are a fan of handcrafted beers, you’ll get some good tips here. If you are thirsty while reading it, I give you fair warning, you’ll be going directly to the beer store or your favorite restaurant to try one or two. And prepare your appetite for a local, traditional favorite: the torta de lechón. You can read about these irresistible roast pork sandwiches by clicking here. Mmmm…I bet this article will make you as hungry as it did me!
So! No excuse for boredom this month! Get your backpack ready, take your magazine, and off you go!
