gina-osorno-3Gina Osorno, singer / songwriter / graphic designer, has been singing and songwriting since she was 13 years old.

“I consider myself a versatile singer, I like many different kinds of music and try to mix them all up when I perform; including pop, rock, ballads, folk, reggae, blues, funk, soul and jazz.”

Gina combines her music career with work as a graphic designer at the Yucatán Symphony Orchestra, where she’s been working since 2009.

Since 2000, Gina has been on many stages in Mérida, México City, Cancun, Chetumal, and Sonora; this last one was very important for her, because she went representing Mérida in a national festival called FAOT.

“Since 2008, I’ve been participating in the jazz scene in Mérida. I’ve never studied a note in my life, (well, just a little guitar), but mostly how I study this genre is by listening to all the great jazz divas, like Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone, and the one and only Ella Fitzgerald, and over time I’ve learned and tried to mix all of their styles together into each song I sing. Today I participate in a band called Jazz Sensitive, with Mauricio Bonfiglio (Argentinian drummer) and Edgar Boffill (Yucatecan pianist). We play at Rosas & Xocolate Boutique Hotel every Wednesday and Saturday 10 pm. I’ve also been invited to sing on many occasions with Ranier Poucheux´s Mérida Big Band, and the Jazz Big Band Mérida with Alberto Palomo (Tribute to Quincy Jones).”

On Thursday nights, Gina performs at Italian restaurant Vite da Bruno at 10 pm, along with popular pianist Roberto Verastegui.

Gina has shared the stage and been the opening act for many important musicians and songwriters from Mexico, including Felipe de la Cruz (songwriter), Angelica Balado (songwriter), Gilberto Cervantes (trumpet player with Troker, Telefunka), Miguel Inzunza (songwriter), Los Claxons (pop band), Elizabeth Meza (jazz singer), and Ely Guerra (rock singer/songwriter).

“Another part of my influence in rock, blues, soul, and songwriting was listening to the Beatles, Ely Guerra, Alanis Morrisette, Fiona Apple, Gustavo Cerati, Etta James, and Amy Winehouse.”

Some of Gina’s projects include Gina & Los Flit (singer and songwriter: www.facebook.com/ginaflit), Jazz Sensitive de Mauricio Bonfiglio (singer: www.facebook.com/jazzsensitive), and FlusBoox blues band (singer: www.facebook.com/flusboox). She has participated in tributes to Paul McCartney & Wings, Garbage, Rock Divas, Gustavo Cerati, The Beatles, Bob Marley, the Bee Gees, and, for her, the most important: Ella Fitzgerald (www.soundcloud.com/ginaosorno).

In January 2012 Gina celebrated 10 years of her music career, presenting songs from each stage of her music path, starting with just her guitar, and then playing with all the bands she has done projects with.

In March of 2012, Gina put together a band (Copy/Paste) to perform folk, soul, blues and funky songs from her favorite bands and singers. She’s had many friends playing with her over time including Yoshio Yam, Eduardo Osorno, and Salvador Formento, but now the band is formed by Edgar Ibarra (guitar), Hugo Aguilar (bass), and Jorge Navarro (drums). “Happily, we found Hennessy’s Irish Pub, and it is quickly becoming one of my favorite places to sing. We are there every Friday night at 10 pm, and we always have great audiences, good vibes, lots of smiles and people really enjoy our music selection.  We play Tracy Chapman, Amy Winehouse, Alanis Morrisette, Etta James, James Brown, Fionna Apple, Beatles, and some Mexican folk songs like La Llorona, and the number one Hennessy’s hit Paloma Negra.”

In December 2012 Gina performed the concert “El Blues Más Azul del Sur” (The Bluest Blues from the South). “This concert was the presentation of my new songs, and we also did some blues standards. The audience was very enthusiastic.”
