About the lecturer: Dr. Peter Mathews is an eminent Maya scholar, famous for his work on Maya hieroglyphs at sites such as Palenque and Yaxchilán. He is author of the book "La Escultura de Yaxchilán", coauthor of the books "The Code of Kings" and "The Bodega of Palenque" with Linda Schele, and is currently working on a monumental Who's Who in the Classic Maya World list, which will compile the biographies of historical personages known from the hundreds of surviving Maya hieroglyphic inscriptions. He received his PhD from Yale and is currently Professor and Archaeology Program Coordinator at La Trobe University in Australia. He has also taught at Harvard University, the University of Calgary, and the University of Copenhagen. He was awarded a MacArthur Prize Fellowship in 1984, and in 2002 was elected a Fellow of the Academy of the Humanities in Australia.
