Yucatán will again be the host of one of the most important annual fairs in southern México, known as “Feria de Todos” (everyone’s fair). It’s 100% family-oriented and suitable for all.

For 24 days, from November 10 to December 3, the exhibition site located in the south part of Mérida will be hosting artistic, sports, cultural, specialized, and recreational shows for all ages. A huge display of commercial and business activity will come alive in the recently remodeled infrastructure that now offers ample parking, kids’ games, and comfortable pedestrian areas for all visitors.

More than 1300 exhibitors will be displaying their products and services. Originally, the fair began as a place for livestock exchange, but its success has expanded and become a reference point in this part of the country when it comes to any kind of show or exhibition.

This year, around 2,300 events have been planned in the 53 hectares that include areas of livestock, commercial, agriculture, handcrafts, gastronomy, mechanical games, and of course the entertainment spaces. Read more.

The jarana is the typical dance of Yucatán. There are two types: the 6×8 jarana, a type of tap dance, is the grandchild of the Jarana Palacio MunicipalAndalusian “aire” and child of the Mestizo song; and the 3×4 jarana, which developed later, is a type of “aire de jota aragonesa” waltz. Originally it was only a dance, but as time went by, rhyming texts were added.

The jarana is a tap dance without fixed steps and no differentiation between the men and the women, and each can make his/her own dance creation. The posture is erect due to the solemnity of the aboriginal dances, but during the waltz sections they make turns while raising their arms in a straight line, like the “jota” dancers, snapping their fingers to represent the Spanish castanets. Two beats of the drum indicate the start of the dance.

If at the end of each jarana there are only a few couples remaining to compete for endurance, the euphoria of the crowd becomes more and more vocal, cheering on their favorite dancers, and identifying the winners by stacking various hats on top of their heads, to symbolize a crown.

It is very common that right in the middle of a dance, one of the dancers will stop the music and shout “bomba!”. At this moment he or she recites a humorous verse to his/her partner, always within the limits of decency. Originally from Spain, it represents a spark of ingenuity which provokes an outbreak of laughter and joy.

You can see a vaquería show every Monday at 9 pm outside the Palacio Municipal. Calle 62 x 61 y 63, Centro.

Music, that is the argument. Music has sounded throughout Israel Galván’s scenic approaches, now relieved from plots, scripts, and theatre. The Red Shoes, Metamorphosis, Galvanized, Sand, The End of this State of Things, Lo Real-Le Réel-The Real…, sounding with no plot, with the momentum of the body and the rhythm. Only music.

It was about it, of trimming down from any gravitas one of the most luminous findings of Israel Galván’s shows: sound. It emerged between Utrera and La Rinconada, between beneficence and mortgages, recycling sounds among a select group of his musicians, offering his public brief explosions of happiness. We all know that Israel Galván is a machine, and he sounds here in all his purity.

Remembranzas Musicales Años 40’s @ Parque de Santiago | Mérida | Yucatán | México

Life is a dance… with a variety of rhythms to enjoy, from the “cumbia” to shake things up a little, to a smooth “bolero” to dance with your partner. That is exactly the attitude you will see among the attendees that enjoy a musical evening full of life…and memories…every Tuesday in Santiago park.

At 8 pm this traditional “barrio” (neighborhood), just a few blocks from downtown, starts receiving visitors, and the almost 200 chairs that are set up around the esplanade that functions as a dance floor, begin to fill up. Older people, grandmothers with their granddaughters, entire families, dance groups, foreigners, among others, are attracted to this joyful musical event. Even elders in wheelchairs gather around to enjoy the show and remember songs from the past.

At 8:30 pm sharp the master of ceremonies welcomes the Orquesta del Ayuntamiento (city hall orchestra), made up of more than 15 musicians, who at that precise moment begin the one and a half hours of music that delights the attendees. The cymbals crash and all the couples come to the dance floor… you will see dancing shoes stepping perfectly to the music, while scarves or combs save seats while their occupants are dancing.

More.
