Mérida Fest 2018 @ Centro Histórico de Mérida
Jan 21 @ 11:00 am

From January 4 to 21, enjoy the celebrations from Mérida Fest. The city of Mérida was founded on January 6, 1542, on the remains of the Maya city of Ichcaanziho (five hills), also known as T’ho, by Francisco de Montejo y León “El Mozo.” So in 2018 we are celebrating 476 years since its foundation!

To commemorate the city with all the honors, as it deserves, the program will have more than 150 dance, theater, scenic and visual arts, literary, music shows, just to name a few, with more than 900 artists on stage. Almost all the events are for free for everyone!

The traditional part of the Mérida Fest celebration will start on the night of January 5th with a serenade to the city, where hundreds of Trova singers walk together to the Municipal Hall to sing to our loyal and noble city. Get your camera ready and arrive early to get a good seat, because the scene of so many Trova singers together and the fireworks after they sing “Las Mañanitas” are unique photo opportunities, plus the fireworks are amazing.

Next day, early in the morning, on January 6, the locals go to mass at the San Ildefonso Cathedral for a ceremony in commemoration of the foundation of our city. Come to all the cultural events that will be taking place in the cultural centers, parks, forums and open areas, and celebrate Mérida with us!

The jarana is the typical dance of Yucatán. There are two types: the 6×8 jarana, a type of tap dance, is the grandchild of the Jarana Palacio MunicipalAndalusian “aire” and child of the Mestizo song; and the 3×4 jarana, which developed later, is a type of “aire de jota aragonesa” waltz. Originally it was only a dance, but as time went by, rhyming texts were added.

The jarana is a tap dance without fixed steps and no differentiation between the men and the women, and each can make his/her own dance creation. The posture is erect due to the solemnity of the aboriginal dances, but during the waltz sections they make turns while raising their arms in a straight line, like the “jota” dancers, snapping their fingers to represent the Spanish castanets. Two beats of the drum indicate the start of the dance.

If at the end of each jarana there are only a few couples remaining to compete for endurance, the euphoria of the crowd becomes more and more vocal, cheering on their favorite dancers, and identifying the winners by stacking various hats on top of their heads, to symbolize a crown.

It is very common that right in the middle of a dance, one of the dancers will stop the music and shout “bomba!”. At this moment he or she recites a humorous verse to his/her partner, always within the limits of decency. Originally from Spain, it represents a spark of ingenuity which provokes an outbreak of laughter and joy.

You can see a vaquería show every Monday at 9 pm outside the Palacio Municipal. Calle 62 x 61 y 63, Centro.

Remembranzas Musicales Años 40’s @ Parque de Santiago | Mérida | Yucatán | México

Life is a dance… with a variety of rhythms to enjoy, from the “cumbia” to shake things up a little, to a smooth “bolero” to dance with your partner. That is exactly the attitude you will see among the attendees that enjoy a musical evening full of life…and memories…every Tuesday in Santiago park.

At 8 pm this traditional “barrio” (neighborhood), just a few blocks from downtown, starts receiving visitors, and the almost 200 chairs that are set up around the esplanade that functions as a dance floor, begin to fill up. Older people, grandmothers with their granddaughters, entire families, dance groups, foreigners, among others, are attracted to this joyful musical event. Even elders in wheelchairs gather around to enjoy the show and remember songs from the past.

At 8:30 pm sharp the master of ceremonies welcomes the Orquesta del Ayuntamiento (city hall orchestra), made up of more than 15 musicians, who at that precise moment begin the one and a half hours of music that delights the attendees. The cymbals crash and all the couples come to the dance floor… you will see dancing shoes stepping perfectly to the music, while scarves or combs save seats while their occupants are dancing.

Romanticism is still alive on the streets of Mérida, in the bohemian nights, and of course in the music of the trios, the main performers of the Yucatecan trova, known for its tributes to women and their beauty. The Yucatecan trio is composed of two guitars, one playing the rhythm and the other the bass notes, and a smaller type of 6-string guitar which produces a sharp sound very characteristic of this musical style.
