Destinations in the
Yucatan Peninsula

There is more to do in the Yucatan Peninsula than anyone can imagine. A wealth of ancient ruins, restored haciendas, colonial cities and natural environments awaits your discovery.

From your modern air-conditioned hotel in a colonial city such as Merida, you can drive to the ancient Mayan ruin of Dzibilchaltun, visit the anthropological museum on the grounds, swim in the cenote, and still have time for a delicious Yucatecan dinner, perhaps at a restored hacienda.

maya sites

The main cities of Campeche, Merida, Playa del Carmen and Cancun have airports, museums, lodging, restaurants, night clubs and more. In the smaller cities such as Valladolid, Progreso, Tulum and Ticul, you will find local artisans selling their products and many beautiful examples of colonial and tropical architecture. And in all the towns in between, you will find jungle, wildlife, mysterious Mayan ruins, and always the friendly Yucatecan people.

Remember, the Yucatan is a safe place: a wonderful combination of ruins, colonial cities, haciendas, beaches and friendly people.

Some of your most memorable adventures may lie in the smallest Mayan pueblos where you might find an abandoned hacienda, a friendly smile and a cold bottle of Coca Cola.

There are many fascinating places you can visit in a day by rental car or bus . When planning a day trip, we recommend that you leave early in the morning and return by sundown, avoiding the roads at night. It gets dark by 7 pm in the summer and 5 pm in the winter. If you plan to stay overnight, you can travel at a more leisurely pace.

Our hotel listing provides information for places to stay in many cities and surrounding towns. Discover one of the Yucatan's famous cenotes or spend the day at a nearby beach. And if you're hungry, check out our listings of restaurants throughout the Peninsula, as well as our nightlife in Merida scene.

Always remember to treat your Yucatecan hosts with respect and kindness, and it will be repaid to you tenfold. These destinations are unlike anything else you will find in the world, but it is the warmth and openness of the Yucatecan spirit that will make your Yucatan experience one you will always remember...
