XVI Season of the Yucatan Symphony Orchestra
"Welcome to the XVI Season of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Yucatán!
"It gives me great pleasure to share with you another season of marvellous concerts which we have programmed for the XVI season of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Yucatán. After a period where we had a change of venue, and the presentation of successful events thanks to your assistance at the Teatro manzanero, we are returning to our splendid Teatro Peón Contreras to present our concerts in their usual place and schedule (Fri. Sep. 9 to Sun. Dec. 11, 2011).
"To begin and celebrate our return to this setting, we inaugurate the season with an opera gala, playing fragments of some pieces of the most well known composers of this genre with the participation of the two winners of the competition Ópera Prima from Canal 22, the soprano Patricia Santos and the tenor Alan Pingarrón.
"The piano will shine this season with 3 very famous concerts and the presence of the internationally-known Mexican pianist Jorge Federico Osorio, playing the majestic Concert No. 5 for Piano “Emperador”, by Beethoven. And Yucatecan Manuel Escalante will play Rhapsody in Blue, by George Gershwin, and the winner of the piano competition José Jacinto Cuevas, Abdiel Vázquez, who will play Concert for Piano by E. Grieg.
"Another outstanding performance will be from Maestro Carlos Prieto, who returns to Mérida to present Concert for Cello No. 1 by Shostakovich. We will also enjoy the presence of Spanish violinist Jesús Reina, playing the virtuoso Concert No. 1 for Violín, by Paganini. And as is our custom, we will also have two talented soloists from our orchestra: concertino Gocha Skhirtladze and Juan José Pastor, co-principal of the horns.
"As guest directors, we will welcome Mexican Ramón Shade -director and founder of chamber choir of Coahuila- and Peruvian conductor Fernando Valcarcel, associate director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Perú.
"We will continue hosting free concerts in the municipalities of Yucatán in order to bring music to every corner of the state.
"Finally, in closing, we will present the grand choral work Carmina Burana, by Carl Orff, with the participation of the choirs of Instituto de Cultura de Yucatán, under the direction of Luis Luna and singers Irasema Terrazas and Josué Cerón.
"With a variety of overtures, concerts, symphonies, choral works, suites, as well as the world premiere of the Yucatecan composer Germán Romero, composers Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Rimski-Korsakov, Strauss, Ravel, Shostakovich, Sibelius, Orff, Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini, Verdi, Puccini, Locatelli, Rachmaninov, Grieg, Gershwin and Paganini, will highlight the XVI season.
