Port of Call: Progreso
Progreso is one of Mexico’s major ports! There is a wealth of activities to suit all tastes here in Yucatán. As we have a 4 mile long dock for your ship, you’ll first encounter the free shuttles from the ship to the Casa de Cultura in the center of Progreso. Here you’ll find many vendors with crafts, and tour companies ready to take you to some of the fascinating sites in our state. Henequen crafts, hammocks, traditional dresses, and more are available at very reasonable prices.
If you would just like to stay in town to shop and relax, you might enjoy the double-decker bus tour of the town. Tours last about 20 minutes and leave every 10 minutes or so from the Casa de Cultura. A true port town, you’ll enjoy the sights and catching a glimpse of the real Mexico. Click here for our list of Yucatan restaurants, including several in Progreso.
Back at the Casa de Cultura, you can walk north two blocks to the malecón – the beachside promenade. Excellent restaurants -such as Eladio’s, Flamingos, Saint Bonnet, and Buddy’s, to name a few – abound. You can eat inside or enjoy beach-side service. Grab a table, order drinks, get free botanas (read botanas article), and enjoy the cool breezes off the Gulf. The water is clean and very shallow – so great for swimming.
Eco-tours are available just south of Progreso in the lagoon: with Capt. Felix, La Ría and Corchito. Capt. Felix can take 2 people in his safe, smaller boat, and he speaks English. He can be reached at cel. 999 220 1186. Email: mieryteranfelix@yahoo.com.mx
La Ría is open every day of the year from 8 am to 7 pm. They have a small restaurant and bar, and coolers on the boats so you can bring your own beer, sodas, etc. They have comfortable tour boats that hold a maximum of 10 people, with life jackets and an awning. 1 1/2 hour and 3 hour tours of the lagoon are offered. The 3 hour tour includes fishing equipment and a chance to swim. La Ría can also arrange fishing trips with 12 hours notice. A maximum of 6 people can rent a fishing boat with all equipment and an experienced captain for a 5 hour tour. They also have water bicycles, and single and double kayaks for rent. English-speaking guides are available. They accept pesos or US dollars, but do not accept credit cards. La Ría can be reached at riaprogreso@gmail.com
Corchito is open every day at 9 am. They have boats that will take you to a natural reserve in the mangroves with palapas, swimming, and hiking. Bathrooms and changing rooms are available. The boat holds a maximum of 12 people. To take a tour, walk about 2 blocks south from the Casa de Cultura to the main square and you'll see the taxi stand. A taxi to La Ría will cost about $20 pesos; to Corchito, $30 pesos. If you have a large group, talk to a van driver and negotiate a price.
Charter Boat Services in Progreso
Flamingo Coast Real Estate in Progreso has a 30' Dorado which is available for charter, ideal for small groups of 4 to 6 guests when you arrive by Cruise Ship. Cruising speed is about 20 knots. The outboards can be raised which means better beach access, and there is a new ladder for easier access for swimming or diving. They are fully licensed for charter and have permits for Alacranes Reef. Fish for yellowtail snapper, black grouper, barracuda, yellow fin tuna, black fin tuna, wahoo, amberjack, blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish, dorado and tuna. Contact Clifford G. McCaa at 999-949-1342, Email: cmccaa@flamingocoast.com.mx or visit www.reelblessedadventures.com
Cruise Ship Special at $450 USD for up to 6 people: all you have time to fish on your stay with pick up at cultural center, breakfast, your choice of bottled water, sodas and beer.
The closest Mayan site is Dzibilchaltún. Only about 20 minutes away from town, it has an excellent small museum showing the history of the Mayan civilization, pyramids you can climb, and a cenote for a refreshing dip.
Autoprogreso Tours has a booth at the Casa de Cultura. This professional tour company has comfortable air-conditioned buses with restrooms, English speaking guides, and many tours to choose from. You can take a tour of the historic center of Mérida, our capital; Dzibilchaltún; a combo Mayan ruins/beach break tour that takes you to the archaeological site of Xcambo and the Hotel Reef Yucatan – an all-inclusive resort on the beach; and, a Flamingo Tour that visits a bird sanctuary, Xcambo, and the fishing village of Telchac Puerto. Autoprogreso is well aware of your time constraints and will get you back to the Casa de Cultura in plenty of time to do a little shopping before taking the free shuttle back to the ship. www.autoprogreso.com
A tour of Uxmal, to the south of Mérida, could be the highlight of your trip. This site has many of the wonders of Chichén Itzá, but is closer to Progreso and is far less crowded.
To be sure to see exactly what you want to see and make it back to the ship on time, consider a custom tour with affable English-speaking native Lawson's Original Yucatan Excursions, or Yucatan Connection.
The City of Progreso has authorized official taxi fares for departures from the Casa de Cultura (effective Feb. 2011). Rates are per vehicle. Car: up to 4 passengers. Van: up to 10 passengers.

Progresso nice town to live in?
Merida is so big... I can speak Spanish... is Progresso a nice, comfortable town to live in? Gracias
Uxmal and cenote
Hi! My family and I are arriving in Progreso on a cruise in August. Is a trip to Uxmal and a cenote do-able? What is the best travel arrangement for us to take considering time constraints? Thanks!
re. UXMAL AND CENOTE
I would think this would be too much for a cruise port day. The travel time alone is at least 2 to 3 hours each way. You can go to a different site with a cenote which is much closer: Dzibilchaltun. http://yucatantoday.com/en/topics/dzibilchaltun
Check out our map of Yucatan, you will see that Uxmal is to the southwest of Merida near the Campeche state border, and Dzib is in between Progreso and Merida. http://yucatantoday.com/en/maps/map-yucatan-peninsula
There are tours available in Progreso when you disembark. I would also suggest a private driver and highly recommend Ralf of William Lawson Driving Service. His email address is lawson_william@hotmail.com He is knowledgeable, reasonable, reliable and is a native English speaker.
money exchange
where can i get the best exchange rate on pesos for U.S. dollars?
re. money exchange
The best rate is always the banks. There are several near the cruise ship dock, just ask for a "banco".
Renting a house in Uaymitun
I have rented a house in Uaymitun in February from Progreso Vacation Rentals. Since this is my first trip here and I'm not familiar with the different rental companies does anyone have any comments on dealing with PVR. I don't like the fact that they don't include customer reviews with the properties as VRBO does. Any help would be appreciated.
I am accustomed to renting vacation homes in the US where you don't have to worry about drinking water, hot water, linens, pool cleanliness, garbage pick-up, etc. and the fact that they have 48 hours after I leave to determine any additional charges. Please, if you have rented beach homes before would you advise me in what to question and look out for?
Lastly, do you recommend having a car? We seem a bit removed out there and would like to do some touring while on the beach. Any recommendations on car rental companies & car insurance providers.
Muchos Gracias
re. renting a house in uaymitun
Have you already paid a deposit? I don't know much about them but if you don't feel comfortable with their policies you should look elsewhere if you have not yet paid a deposit. I do know Susan of http://www.kab-yucatan.com/ and know she is reliable. If you have already paid a deposit perhaps you can ask her to tell you what questions you should ask. Tell her Juanita from Yucatan Today gave you her contact info. Having a car will be a great help...here is our list...they each offer their own insurance: http://yucatantoday.com/en/topics/car-rentals
tours
Hi I will be visiting by cruiseship in April with a 4 & 2 year old. I am really considering autoprogresso tours. Any tips/recommendations for us 1st timers?
Re. tours
I would suggest, with such young children, something which offers lots of variety and change of scenery, as opposed to just a city tour or just an archaeological site. The "Combo" tour or the "Flamingo" tour may be your best bets, with the latter giving you the option of either returning to the ship at the end or wandering around the town of Progreso, which means beach and restaurants and shopping.
home rental company
also check out www.vrbo.com.... Lots of nice houses there too! I got a great one in Guanajuato once VRBO 316865
bird sanctuary near Uaymitun
Looking to take a combi here from Progreso. Is there anything else to do there after we look at the birds? Beach, restaurant? Also what exactly is the Corchito place you mentioned? We like to do things ourselves instead of paying a lot $ for tours.
The trip to Uxmal plus a
The trip to Uxmal plus a cenote is possible, just not the Cuzama cenotes.
Excursion
We will have a group of 20 going to Progresso via cruise ship in January 2012. We looked at the Autoprogresso tours. How should we proceed with such a large group - private or book with Autopresso? If we have such a big group, could we ask to possibly cutomize our tour? We were considering these excursions: Dzibilchaltún or the combo Mayan ruins/beach break tour that takes you to the archaeological site of Xcambo and the Hotel Reef Yucatan – an all-inclusive resort on the beach. Thanks.
Excursion
Hola! Since you are a group of 20 I would recommend getting a customized tour. As you mention can go to Dizibilchaltun and visit the pyramids and swim in the open cenote, and maybe take a driving tour around Merida. Or you can go to Xcambo that is a pretty small site and then go to the beach at the Reef Club. What to do depends on what your group expects from this visit. I would probably recommend the first option... Go to Dzibilchaltun and they drive into Meridas downtown and then head back to the cruise. Check your prices with Autoprogreso as well as other companies to get the best deal.

Tour Including Fishing
Very last minute on this, but a couple of people in my group leaving on the Carnival Elation this Saturday December 3rd are interested in fishing while in port in Progresso. A google search is not turning up a lot of options. Any suggestions here? I have already contacted the La Ria address listed above and autoprogresso by email. Thank you.

Autoprogreso
My family and I will have a cruise stop at Progreso on 12/14. I was in touch with Autoprogreso's online reservation person Gerardo Medina. But when I was ready to book the excursion with him, their website domain expired on 12/4. Their e-mail system stopped working at the same time. Would you mind giving me their phone number please? Thank you very much!

June 26 tours
We have a party of 5 adults and 5 children. We will beat the port in progreso on June 26. We are interested in seeing dzibilchaltuan ruins/ sink hole and seeing the beach. I know carnival offers this tour with an open bar but is is 79$ / adult and $69/ kids. Do they offer this tour in land cheaper? Any suggestions on names of ppl or companies that would offer it. Our boat leaves at 4 so we would need to be back by 3 or so to be inte safe side.

Do you know much about the reef Yucatan hotel and its resort? Prices( American dollars)? Quality and can we book the man tours in Progresso as well?
Re. June 26 tours
LawsonsYucatan does private tours and the emphasis is on a personalized experience for your group. If price is your number one concern, take the AutoProgreso tours from Progreso or from the ship.
re. reef hotel
It is a beachfront all-inclusive hotel of high quality. Their website should give you the info you need: http://www.reefyucatan.com/
What fun thing to do as a group in Progresso
What fun and resonable activities can a group of 5 do in Progresso. I heard the water is not clear and it's muddy. What do you recommend ?
We are traveling on a cruise this weekend.
Thanks!!
re. what fun thing
The water is a bit muddy during the winter months when the north winds come in, but otherwise it's fine. But there are plenty of things to do! This article gives you lots of options, my suggestion is to follow the links to read further and also contact the people mentioned.
