Pet Adoption of the Week
Every week we post a photo and story about a dog available for adoption from Evolución, a shelter for abused, abandoned and neglected dogs. The sanctuary is running at full capacity and no dogs are being accepted at the present time; however be sure to scroll through the Related Gallery to see photos of all the pets featured in this article.
THE DOGS OF EVOLUCION NEED YOU... Sanctuary Evolucion is a humane, no kill shelter that takes care of abused or abandoned dogs waiting for their forever homes. At Evolucion they have a safe haven. With the proceeds from fundraisers, we have been able to make much needed improvements to the facility, spay and neuter most of the dogs and ensure that every dog receives basic medical care. However, food is our biggest expense and even with a discount from our supplier, the sanctuary needs to raise 20,000 pesos for food each and every month – 650 pesos every day. If you care about animals, we are asking you to lend your support and become a monthly food donor. A 300 peso (25 US$) donation will feed two dogs for an entire month! DONATING TO EVOLUCION EVERY MONTH IS EASY, HERE’S HOW:
· Set up an automatic monthly direct deposit to Evolucion’s Banamex Account - Evolucion Kuuch utia al alab ool A.C. Number : CLABE : 002910700038253518 or
· Go to http://www.Evolucionyucatan.com and donate online, or
· If you live in Merida and would like to make a cash donation, please email kenandpatricia@hotmail.com
EVOLUCIÓN ANIMAL SHELTER NEEDS QUARANTINE UNIT
Evolucion urgently needs a dedicated, "veterinary-approved" Quarantine Facility to isolate new arrivals, dogs recovering from surgery and dogs with infectious diseases from the dogs that are ready for adoption. This is a significant undertaking as we need to raise 58,000 pesos (approx. $5,000 USD) on top of covering day-to-day expenses. So far we have 11,000 pesos ($900 USD) in donations which will allow us to begin construction but our target is to complete the project before the end of October, 2011. HOW YOU CAN HELP… Purchase a building block for 200, 300, 400 or 500 pesos ($15,$25,$30 or $40 USD). Go to http://www.Evolucionyucatan.com to donate online, or, if you live in the Yucatan, do you have building materials lying around that you can donate - cement, sand, gravel, blocks, rebar, exterior door, windows, chain-link fencing? Please telephone Patricia @ 9999 55 37 00 to make arrangements for pick up. Block-by-Block we can do this with your help. Your contribution will be acknowledged on the Quarantine Donor Board. Being in the “Dog House” isn’t always a bad thing!

Toro, Sep. 12, 2011:
This is a second posting for Toro because he finds life at Evolucion very stressful and we need to find him a loving home. He is a beautiful white pit bull terrier about 1 ½ years old. Toro came to the sanctuary in bad shape but with meds, love, food and sterilization, Toro has become a loving and energetic boy! He desperately needs a forever home as soon as possible as the sanctuary does not have the space to let him run and play as much as he wants. He needs a human with space for him to run in the back yard or someone committed to taking him on walks or runs daily. He is an “only pet” kind of guy although he gets along with small dogs. All humans are wonderful in his eyes. He will be playing at Perro Paraiso for the next two weeks if you would like to meet him and see if you are a match! For more information, contact Silvia at 9991-93-06-28.

So, if I close my eyes and wish really hard, will I get a new home? Please think about me as I would make a fabulous family pet, and then call Silvia at 9991-93-06-28. Paws crossed!

Since recording Coco’s story, Evolucion has received a donation from a caring InTheYucatan subscriber to cover the cost of her leg operation. However, we have two more dogs needing surgery who are also waiting until we raise enough money to cover their procedures. Can you find it in your heart to help these dogs live normal lives? Back to Coco – her story is a familiar one as she was rescued from an abusive home. Are you able to share your home with this beautiful chocolate lab? She is a lovely gentle girl who would make a loyal and loving companion. To contribute to our Surgery Fund or to find out more about this special dog, please contact Silvia at 9991-93-06-28. Nisa’s had it rough! Silvia found her wandering the streets with a chain, a rope and a wire around her neck and acid had been thrown on her head and neck. The scars have healed, her hair has grown back and she has recovered from her injuries. Nisa would not be suitable in a home with cats. We would love her to find a new home so she can finally get a taste of what a dog’s life is supposed to be. For more information about this cute little dog, please call Silvia at 9991 93 06 28 or visit www.evolucionyucatan.com.

Hi! I’m BomBom! I am absolutely beautiful with soft black, curly fur and I love to be around my human friends. I walk well on a leash and have been neutered. I also have all my shots. I was found in the street by folks who already had adopted two dogs from Evolucion, so unfortunately they couldn’t take me in. I believe I may have belonged to a family at one time, as I’m not at all street savvy, and just missed being hit by a car before being rescued. I would make a wonderful family pet and really deserve a forever home. Would you consider bringing me into your home? For more information, contact Silvia at 9991-93-06-28 or email Linda at Lin@evolucionyucatan.com

Lua, Jan. 24, 2011:
Hi! I’m Lua! I am very energetic and love to run and play! I was rescued by a wonderful volunteer whose mother spotted me tied to a pole starving and without water for days in the sun. When they cut me loose and took me to the vet, I was so sore and thin I had no hair. But, I was so happy to have been rescued that my tail never stopped wagging. I spent several weeks recuperating at the vet and am 100% healthy. All I need to find is my forever home. Can you adopt me? For more information, contact Silvia at 9991-93-06-28 or email Linda at Lin@evolucionyucatan.com

Lizette, Dec. 13, 2010:
Hi! I’m Lizette! I am very friendly and love both my dog and cat house mates! I was rescued by two volunteers who spotted me running down the middle of the street scared. I was so frightened that when they jumped out of the car to rescue me, I just kept running! I finally slowed down and hid under a parked car where they were able to coax me out. I’ve been living in a foster home since that day and am hoping to find my forever home. Can you adopt me? For more information, contact Silvia at 9991-93-06-28 or email Linda at linda.letcher@yahoo.com

Hi! I’m Daisy! I am very friendly and love to go on walks! I was thrown into the streets when I was just a puppy, but thankfully was found by a nice lady who brought me to Sanctuary Evolución. I am about 1 ½ years old; I have been spayed and have had all my shots. All I want for the holidays is a loving family who will take care of me and allow me to be part of the family. And I promise to give you lots of love and joy in return! For more information, contact Silvia at 9991-93-06-28 or Jill at 9991-43-47-11, or email Jill at snjbenson@yahoo.com

Stephie, Nov. 15, 2010:
Hola mis amigos! I am Stephie! I am big and strong and, while I may look intimidating, I am actually very sweet and shy. I have been at Sanctuary Evolución for 3 years…actually, I was born here. You see, my mother was brought to the Sanctuary when she was pregnant and very skinny and rescued off the streets. She gave birth to me and my 3 siblings, but they have since been adopted. I am here still waiting for my forever home. I am spayed and have had all my shots. If you are interested in me, or any of the dogs at Sanctuary Evolución, please contact Jill Benson at 9991-43-47-11 or email at info@evolucionyucatan.com

Rambo, Nov. 8, 2010:
Hi my friends! I am Rambo! I was hit by a car and my paw was crushed in the accident. But I’m doing ok now. I have a strong personality – that’s why they call me
Rambo! I don’t always get along with other male dogs, but I love female dogs and people. I am about 4 years old, have had all my shots and have been neutered. Now, I am just looking for my forever home! If you are interested in me, Rambo, or any of the dogs at Sanctuary Evolución, please contact Jill Benson at 9991-43-47-11 or email at info@evolucionyucatan.com

Snoopy, Nov. 1, 2010:
Hola mis amigos! Today’s Pet of the Week is a very special one! Meet Snoopy! Snoopy has been with Silvia Cortes at Sanctuary Evolución longer than any other dog – 9 years. He was actually born at Silvia’s home. You see, Snoopy’s mother was the seventh dog Silvia Cortes had picked up at of the streets when she first began to rescue dogs some 9 years ago. Snoopy’s mother was pregnant and in terrible condition. She was extremely thin, but managed to give birth to healthy puppies. All were adopted with the exception of Snoopy. Snoopy has made his home with Silvia at Evolución and this is the only home he has ever known. However, a loving family could provide him with more attention as he so richly deserves. If you are interested in Snoopy, or any of the dogs at Sanctuary Evolución, please contact Jill Benson at 9991-43-47-11 or email at info@evolucionyucatan.com

Doby Gillis and Chelsea, Oct. 25, 2010:
Check out these two beautiful Dobermans – Doby Gillis and Chelsea. They were both "abandoned" and found tied to the front gate of Sanctuary Evolución. Poor Chelsea had a heavy chain and wire wrapped so tightly around her neck that it took the volunteer 30 minutes to cut the wire away and free her from the chain. Both Doberman's were sickly and very thin, but now look at them! They are healthy and happy and just waiting for their forever home! For more information to adopt Doby Gillis or Chelsea, please, contact Jill at 9991-43-47-11 or email info@evolucionyucatan.com

Phoebe, Oct. 18, 2010:
Hi my friends! I’m Phoebe and I am ready to be adopted! I came to Sanctuary Evolución in the middle of the night when someone literally threw me over the wall and into the sanctuary. I was quite afraid at first, but I soon realized I was in a good place. I am about a year old, maybe a little less and I just live to play! I love other dogs, kids and people and I would make the perfect pet for a loving family! For more information, contact Jill at 9991-43-47-11, or email info@evolucionyucatan.com

Ceniza and Netira, Oct. 4, 2010:
Check out these 2 adorable puppies - Ceniza and Netira. They were found in the garbage one morning in front of Sanctuary Evolucion. Apparently someone dropped them there hoping that volunteers from the sanctuary would find them the next morning. Lucky for these little guys, someone did. They have been in foster care for several weeks until they were old enough to get their shots, and now they are at the facility waiting for a loving family to adopt them! They are very sweet and they live to play!! For more information, contact Silvia at 9991-93-06-28 or Jill at 9991-43-47-11, or email Jill at snjbenson@yahoo.com

Beauty, Sep. 27, 2010:
Hi! My name is Beauty – because I am just a beautiful 3 year old Dalmatian. I was found in the streets of Centro when a kind person noticed that I was just wandering around and had no home to go to. I was on the thin side, but now that I have good food, I am putting on weight quite nicely. I was probably owned at one time because I am very accustomed to people. I am currently in foster care through a volunteer at Sanctuary Evolución, but I am looking for my forever home! I am very friendly and get along well with people and other dogs. Truth is, I just like being around people. And since I was rescued out of the streets, I am so much happier. I have been vaccinated and will be spayed soon. For more information, contact Silvia at 9991-93-06-28 or Jill at 9991-43-47-11, or email Jill at snjbenson@yahoo.com

Molly, Sept. 20, 2010:
Hi! I’m Molly! I am a shar-pei and pit bull mix! And I am the sweetest dog you will ever meet! I am currently in foster care waiting for adoption. There are 5 other dogs here and I love to play with them! I was found in the streets of Centro very hungry and with a rope around my neck. I also had some superficial wounds on my face and neck. . But all is well now, I just have a slight scar where the rope was. Did I mention how friendly I am? The people I am with have assured me that I will only be adopted into a loving family, and not to someone who just wants a guard dog or who wants to fight me. Besides, I’m a lover not a fighter! I am about 2 years old, have had all my shots and have been spayed. For more information, contact Silvia at 9991-93-06-28 or Jill at 9991-43-47-11, or email Jill at snjbenson@yahoo.com

Gallo, Sep. 13, 2010:
Hi! My name is Gallo! They call me Gallo (which means Rooster) because when something really piques my interest (like a squirrel or something fun going on), my left ear sometimes stands up….they say I look like a rooster when I do this. I love people and I love to play. I am about 6-7 years old, but I have lots of energy. I was found walking around a park in Centro when some kindly person noticed that I was alone and hungry. She took me to Sanctuary Evolución, which has been my home for about 8 months. I like playing with my dog family and friends here, but what I really want is my forever home! I have been neutered and have had all my shots. Please come see me! For more information, contact Silvia at 9991-93-06-28 or Jill at 9991-43-47-11, or email Jill at snjbenson@yahoo.com

I have had all my shots and have been neutered. So come see me! For more information, contact Silvia at 9991-93-06-28 or Jill at 9991-43-47-11, or email Jill at snjbenson@yahoo.com

The puppies are 5 females and 1 male and they should be ready for adoption in about 3-4 weeks. Come pick out your puppy today! Chino, August 9, 2010:
Hi! I'm Chino! Check out how cute and friendly I am. I was owned at one time, but unfortunately I had a lot of ticks, so the owners decided they didn't want me anymore. Instead of trying to find me a new home, they tied me to a tree in the median of the road in front of their house. I was there without food and water until a kind person came by and rescued me. I have been at Sanctuary Evolución ever since and now am just looking for my forever home. I am about 3-4 years old, I am neutered and have had all my shots. Two puppies desperately need a home, June 22, 2010:
On Sat. June 19 a local vet rescued 2 adorable pups who were tied up with wire outside a Merida house, sitting in their own excrement. She took them home, bathed them, and is de-worming them and giving them their puppy shots. She cannot keep them as she is 5 months pregnant and already has a dog and cat. There is a photo here in the Related Gallery called "Dos Cachorros". For more information, contact Silvia at 9991-93-06-28 or Jill at 9991-43-47-11, or email Jill at snjbenson@yahoo.com
Tabitha, June 7, 2010:
Hi! My name is Tabitha and I am a great dog ready for adoption. I am very sweet and I love to play. And I have already been spayed. A little about me: I have been staying at a sanctuary called Evolución where I enjoy the the company of the rest of my dog family, but I would prefer to be in the loving arms of a human family so I can offer all the love and energy I have. I came to Evolución about 3 years ago. I had been hit by a car and suffered an injury to one of my legs. I now have a slight limp which is hardly noticable. I also came in with a very bad and painful tumor near my bladder, but thanks to a wonderful veterinarian, I am now cured and doing fine. Despite everything that has happened, I am still a very happy dog. Now all is well and I am happy and healthy, but I am missing something very important in my life....I would like a family to take care of me and provide a home for me. Please, if you a place for me in your heart, and room for me in your home, come and adopt me. I'll be waiting for you!! To see how pretty I am, click on the photo! Mecanico, posted Aug. 23, 2010, adopted November 2010:
Dear Friends. The story of Mecanico is an amazing story of pain and suffering, of rescue, and finally, of the kindness of people and a local vet who were key to this dog's survival. His full story is longer than we can put here. When he was rescued, he had been starved to the point where it was unsure whether or not he would make it. In his first year and a half of life, he had been hit by a car, apparently on 3 separate occasions, hit with rocks, suffered from severe malnutrition and mange, and somehow managed to survive distemper without being vaccinated. A very kind vet in Centro, Dr. Gabriel Simón of Zoovet, kept him in his facility for more than a month while he recuperated. Dr. Gabriel did not charge one peso for this service. He is a kind and decent man. Mecanico (so named because he was rescued from a mechanic's shop) needed to recuperate not only physically, but spiritually as well. He was a dog with little desire to live. His mange was to the level that much of his fur was gone, and his skin was just a gray mass. He did not even look like a dog. But with lots of care and love, within a month he was a different dog. Jill of Evolución visited Mecanico every day at the vet's office. She remembers how his tail would wag and he would run up to see her and give her lots of kisses. His health is still not perfect as he has a leg with a bone that healed poorly, but he still manages to run. He has been through all of this - and is only about 1 1/2 years old. If there was ever a dog that deserved love, this is the one. For more information, contact Silvia at 9991-93-06-28 or Jill at 9991-43-47-11, or email Jill at snjbenson@yahoo.com NOTE: THERE IS A PHOTO OF MECANICO IN OUR RELATED GALLERY TAKEN 2 DAYS AFTER HE WAS FOUND...THIS PHOTO WILL BREAK YOUR HEART. UPDATE: Bonnie, in Canada, saw the story on Yucatan Today and decided to adopt Mecanico when she returned to Merida. He is now with her and his new canine and feline siblings at her B&B in Merida. Hello Friends! My name is Onyx, I am about a year old and I am available for adoption! I am very friendly, I love other dogs and I love to run and play. I was rescued about 6 months ago by Silvia, the founder of Evolucion. She noticed me because I was walking along the fence outside the airport very slowly and seemingly disoriented. I was weak and very malnourished. But she took me in and cared for me - and now look at me! All I need now is for that special family to adopt me. And good news - I'm already spayed! I was very thin, but with the good food and the love I received at the shelter, I quickly put on weight. All my puppies were adopted into loving homes, but I am still here waiting for my turn. I am very happy and I just like to play and enjoy life. I am about 4 years old, and have already been spayed and vaccinated. I get along great with kids and other dogs. Please come by and see me!
