Maria Lagunes at MACAY
The name María Lagunes has been associated with national art since the early 50's; she is well known for engraving, lithography, ceramics and painting. This Veracruz artist is recognized for opening the path of contemporary experimentation, in the artistic expressions of the 60s and 70s.
Lagunes delved into the study of monumental sculpture for 4 years. In fact, the French government gave her a scholarship in 1966 to study the integration of sculpture with architecture and urbanism. She also had the chance to study engraving with Japanese artists and experimental ceramics with Juan Soriano.
In 1973 she was invited to exhibit at the Le Salón du Mai in the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, a distinction only granted to the best artists in the world. She also deserves special mention for her participation in 2005 in the revitalization of the Roman Theater of Spoleto (Umbria, Italy). For this project she created 2 large format sculptures. The works harmonize with the building which dates from the first century after Christ.
Today, the work of Lagunes has been admired and recognized in numerous cities of Spain, France and Italy. On this occasion, MACAY Museum presents: María Lagunes, Form and Time, an ample collection which glimpses the intense universe of this Mexican artist. The works which are displayed in the north gallery and the Expoforo document the work in sculpture, drawing, painting, and tapestry completed over five decades.
The city, the people, the constant flow, the conglomeration are themes captured with ingenuity and shrewdness in each of Lagunes’ works; the verticality of her pieces, the invitation to internalize each structure, to penetrate the soul of her work; in this way, generously, Lagunes transports us to imagined worlds.
Referring to her work, Lagunes has said: "Mine is an idea of universal art, without temporal or geographical barriers, deeply connected to man, the city, and nature."
