Jazz for the Children

The goal of “Jazz for the Children” on Feb. 27 was to raise funds to help children in needy communities. Telchac Education was the lucky beneficiary of this year’s event. Formed in January, 2009, Telchac Education provides sponsors to supply backpacks, school supplies and uniforms to Telchac Puerto children. The funds raised in this event will be used to amplify the program. Contact telchaceducation@yahoo.com for info.

The "Big Band," a part of the Yucatán Symphony Orchestra, delighted the audience with their jazz orchestra playing the swinging sounds of the big band era, including classics made famous by Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Harry James and Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey. The Big Band played for more than an hour, then a DJ provided more music to enjoy under the full moon.

All ticket holders participated in the raffle for a weekend stay at Villas Wayak on the 12 - 14 of March. Tickets cost 200 pesos and included entrance into the event, wine, delicious finger food, a coffee bar, and brownies.

The event was a wildly successful night with a full moon, elegant setting, happy music, people dancing, good ticket sales and generous people. Telchac Education received $38,000 pesos AND an anonymous Canadian donor offered $5,460 US DOLLARS for ALL the Jr. High kids to get scientific calculators AND USB flash sticks.
