Holbox Island

holbox.jpg

Holbox (hol-bosh) is an island located near the northeastern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo. It is part of the Yum Balam ecological reserve, separated from land by the Yalahua Lagoon. Holbox is 26 miles long and beautiful seashells are constantly washing up onto its fine white sand beaches. The jade green Gulf of Mexico waters that bathe these beaches are beautiful and swimmer-friendly. The water is usually calm and shallow at the beaches, making it a great place for swimming with children.

On this island there is only one small village, also called Holbox, where less than 1,500 people make their home. The streets are sand lined with brightly painted wooden houses. The majority of the people are fishermen. They catch large red snapper, bonitos and grouper. These fishermen also go after lobster and octopus in season. As you can imagine, the seafood sold in the local restaurants is fresh and delicious. Treat yourself here to some of the world's best ceviche, a cold dish with fish, shrimp or other shellfish marinated with tomatoes, onions, lime juice, and cilantro. We recommend El Sushi de Holbox, on Calle Tiburon Ballena, tel: 984 138 5571, opening hours: 1 pm to 1 am; and Restaurante La Cueva del Pirata, with an Italian chef, for seafood, pizzas, and fresh pastas, on the Zócalo.

The Yalahua Lagoon separates Holbox from the mainland. Find a local driver to take you on his boat, and explore the wonders of this mangrove lagoon.

One place to visit is Isla Pájaros, an island where the birds come to sleep at night. Approximately 140 species of birds live in the Yucatán and visit this island at different times of the year.

Many are permanent residents. Humans are not allowed on the island...only on the observation towers...and it can only be reached by boat. Because these rules have been respected by man, the birds are not afraid, so it is possible to actually get pretty close to them.

There are several hotels, from small hostels to three-star hotels on the beach. You will find restaurants with delicious typical cuisine along with national and international dishes. Try some lobster pizza.

To get around Holbox there are golf carts that can be rented by the hour. If you see a Bassett Hound, his name is "Maclovio" and he really is a nice guy!!! He's even been known to get in the golf cart with people for the ride!

Summer attraction:
For several years now, whale sharks have been coming to the northern tip of the Yucatán peninsula to feed and mate during the months of June through September. Tourism based on whale shark watching has increased dramatically in the last few years and government agencies have taken steps to protect these magnificent animals so that the species will not be harmed and so they will continue to return to this area. For that reason, Holbox has recently been named by the Mexican government as the only port that can offer trips to swim with the whale sharks, and there are strict rules against scuba equipment being used to view them in the area. Local guides have been trained to give tours that are as safe for the whale sharks as they are for their human visitors. Read our article on whale sharks in Holbox to get a more profound insight about the experience as well as information for tours.

How to get to Holbox:
From Mérida, you can take a bus ("Oriente") that leaves at 11:30 pm (the terminal is on Calle 69 x 68 y 70 and the cost is 168 pesos) and gets to Chiquila at 5 am, where you catch a ferry to the island. The return departs at 5:30 am arriving to Mérida at 11 am. The other option is with Noreste, departing Merida at 10.30 am and arriving Chiquila at 4.30 pm, cost is 145 pesos, from their station at Calle 67 x 50. This bus returns at approx. 4.30 pm, arriving Merida 10.30 pm. If you go by car, it is better to take the libre (free) Mérida-Cancún road to kilometer 80 to the Customs building at El Ideal, where you turn to the left until you reach Chiquila. Parking costs 50 pesos per day but they charge by day, not by night, so if you stay overnight you will be charged 100 pesos.

Bus from Cancun: 80 pesos for the milk run, and 150 pesos for the direct bus to Chiquilá. The direct bus to Chiquilá leaves at  2:30 pm from ADO in Cancun.

Ferry crossings:

"9 Hermanos"
From Holbox to Chiquila: 5 am, 7 am, 9 am, 10 am, 11 am, 1 pm, 3 pm, 4 pm, 6 pm, 8 pm. During peak vacation dates the ferry is hourly.
From Chiquila to Holbox: 6 am, 8 am, 10 am, 11 am, 12 pm, 2 pm, 4 pm, 5 pm, 7 pm, 9:30 pm. During peak vacation dates the ferry is hourly.
The cost is 80 pesos per person.

"Monkeys"
From Holbox to Chiquila: 7 am, 11 am, 1 pm, 4 pm, 7 pm.
From Chiquila to Holbox: 8 am, 12 pm, 2 pm, 5 pm, 8 pm
The cost is 50 pesos per person.

If you don't want to wait, you can hire a "lancha" from one of the men waiting around the dock. That will cost you about $350 pesos from 1 to 6 persons (450 at night), but you might be able to share it with someone else who is waiting.

Flights:
You can also fly to Holbox with Aerosaab Airlines air tours from Playa del Carmen, Cancun and Tulum: http://www.aerosaab.com/

FROM CHIQUILA BACK TO MERIDA

Hi,

I will be be be visiting Isla Holbox this November and I am concerned about how I will get back to Merida. According to the information posted the only bus to Merida departs at 5am! Is this possible? Please help.

Thanks.

02.

bus

Yes, I am sorry to say there is only one bus per day. It is the same bus in and out. It leaves merida at 11.30 pm, arrives Chiquila around 5 am, then turns around and comes back.

03.

Weather??

How well did Isla Holbox survive Hurricane Ida? Has it impacted the island in any way? Does the island have power? I am scheduled to go there on Wednesday, Nov 11th.....

04.

Ida

We have no reports of damage or power failures there. You should be fine!

05.

The bus

How comfortable is the bus from Merida? Is sleep possible or is it filled with chickens and singing all night?

06.

THE BUS

I thought the same. The second class buses in my opinion are comfortable - not at all chicken and goat buses. However they make stops and the ride can be bumby sometimes. I met a few travelers who took the night bus to Holbosh and they were totally fine with it.

I did make it to Isla Holbosh by way of Cancun. I took a 7am ADO bus from Merida to a bus station in Cancun, then a second class (not sure if Mayab or Oriente line) to Chiquila - then a ferry to the Holbosh.

I was traveling all day, which I did not mind because I really enjoyed the scenery. I checked into my hotel around 5pm that same day.

Good Luck

07.

Merida to Holbox

Would it be possible to take a car and driver from Merida to the ferry. I think there are several ferries during the day??

08.

Ferry to Holbox

The ferry runs all day from Chiquila (6 am, 8 am, 10 am, 11 am, 12 am, 2 pm, 4 pm, 5 pm,Last ferry = 7 pm) I haven't done the bus from Merida to Chiquila, but have taken the bus from Cancun to Chiquila and back quite a few times. Very comfortable and no problems. The ferry dock is next to the bus stop in Chiquila.

You can also contact your Holbox hotel and they can help with arranging a driver from Merida. We did this when we stayed at Miwimbi and it was very reasonably priced ($65 USD pp for 2 people) from Cancun airport all the way to the hotel doorstep). We did this going to the island the first time we visited because we just weren't sure of what to expect. After that we did the bus thing, because the bus is much much much cheaper.

09.

octopus season question

Can you tell me when octopus fishing season is? Thanks...

10.

season

The octopus fishing season in Yucatan and Campeche is Aug. 1 to Dec. 15.

11.

Bugs

What time of year are the mosquitos (or whatever the biting bugs are) bad?

12.

mosquitos

Mosquitos thrive on moisture, so they are worse during the rainy season, which is normally June through October. We seem to have more rain in the winter months than we used to, so they can appear at any time of the year, but they also don't like the cold, so even when it rains in the winter there are fewer. Be sure to travel with mosquito repellant no matter when you come, keep it with you all the time, and you will be fine. They are also worse at dawn and dusk and they are attracted to dark clothing.

Whale Sharks/ Manta Rays Returning to Holbox in 2010?

Our family is planning a trip to Holbox during the week of May 4, 2010. While it may be early, have the whale sharks and manta ray arrived?

14.

re. whale sharks/manta rays

As far as we know they have not arrived yet. But they may appear during your visit. It would be early but you never know!

15.

whale sharks

are the whale sharks there in early september? is the season very stormy then?

16.

re. whale sharks

Normally the season for the whale sharks is from May 15 to Sep. 15, but of course this is nature so there are never any guarantees! The weather can range from perfection to hurricane...our hurricane season is from June 1-Nov. 30. It is likely that there would be afternoon thunderstorms in any case, but they are usually brief.

17.

thanks!! i was there end of

thanks!! i was there end of march and it was paradise but of course missed the dominos and would very much like to see them but am afraid of the high heat in june/july/august.

Akumal to Holbock?

Hello,

I will be traveling with my daughter to stay at the Grand Palladium Colonial in July. I would very much like to take a day trip out to Holbock. What would be the fastest and easiest way to get there from Akumal, and what should I expect to pay? Thanks!
Ellie

19.

re. akumal to holbox

You can try this tour company:
http://www.holboxtravel.com/

20.

:)

Thank you very much! Since we will bein Akumal - over an hour south of Canucn, and Holbock is north of Cancun, if it is too far for a day trip. I am wondering Cozumel would be a better day trip but I have heard so many great things about Holbock.... Any suggestions?

Thanks again!

Ellie

21.

re. akumal to holbox

Hola, Holbox would be far for a day trip, but do check in with the website I gave you above. They specialize in tours there and have departures from Cancun etc. Rene is the owner and he will have all the answers for you. Cozumel would be closer but obviously is a very different experience.

22.

Thanks!

Thanks Juanita. I visited the site and will give them a call. I appreciate the info. Have a wonderful day.

transportation from Cancun

Hi,
We'll be in Holbox in October and are wondering about transportation to and from Cancun airport. If it's not too much trouble, we're interested in taking a bus rather than a private taxi.
What do you recommend? How frequent is the serivce?
Thanks,
Diane

Car to Holbox

I'm renting a car in Mérida and driving towards Chiquilá. Once I get to Chiquilá, can I take the car with me in the ferry to Holbox, or do I have to leave it in Chiquilá? If the latter, is there a save place to leave the car in Chiquilá? Thanks. --Connie.

26.

Trip: Cancun, Cozumel, Isla Holbox

My husband and I have a fabulous trip to the Yucatan. We took the bus from the Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen and from there, the ferry over to Cozumel. We took a cab and drove to a family member's condo. We stayed there a day to rest from the flight and to get oriented. Then we returned to the mainland and rented a car and drove to Chiquila where we parked the car (for our 3 days on Holbox). We missed the last ferry but easily got a "lancha" (launch) to the island. A golf-cart taxi took us to our hotelito (Pasada Mawimbi). We would do it all again in a heart beat! Ellen

27.

re. car to holbox

No, you cannot take the car on the ferry. There is a parking lot by the ferry where everyone leaves their cars. I have not heard of any security problems there.

28.

Rental car to Holbox

We are renting a car in Cancun and driving to Chiquila, park the car and take ferry to Holbox. We are staying 7 days on the island and plan to take day trips on the mainland a couple of times. We just want the option to sightsee. Does this sound like a good idea?

29.

re. rental car to holbox

It does, in some ways, but your "day trip" options will be somewhat limited in view of the remote setting of Isla Holbox. Another option would be to spend a couple of nights in Holbox, then continue to other parts of the peninsula in your car. This article may give you some ideas: http://yucatantoday.com/en/topics/must-do-s-yucatan

30.

Flamingos

I will be coming to the Yucatan from Feb 1-18 and would love to explore in and around Holbox during the last half of my trip. I'm also want to see flocks of flamingos. From what I've read they are along various parts of the northern coast at different times of the year. Might they be in the Holbox area in February? If not do you know the best places to find them then?

31.

re. flamingos

They should be there...and the other 2 best bets are Celestun and Rio Lagartos.

Read more: http://yucatantoday.com/en/topics/rio-lagartos and http://yucatantoday.com/en/topics/celestun

32.

car parking

There are many, covered, secure, guarded lots to park in right before the ferry. Over New Year (2010-11) it was 50 pesos/daily.

Whale Sharks - July? August? Weather?

We're planning a trip to see the Whale Sharks, and see that there's a Whale Shark Festival July 15-17 (Isla Mujeres). So, is July a better bet than August for seeing them? Are all tours out of Holbox? Is August weather more likely to be stormy (than July)? We plan to travel by rental car, and could get ourselves to the Holbox ferry. What are the advantages of coming to Holbox for whale watching versus Mujeres or elsewhere. Thanks!

34.

re. july august weather etc.

We don't have info about the isla Mujeres festival or tours but do know that Holbox is the main site for the whale sharks. Weather is about the same both months, (rainy season) and possibility of a hurricane increases as the summer progresses. Holboix is smaller than Isla and their entire focus is whale sharks during the summer, whereas Isla will be more crowded with tourists during school summer break.

YT editor

35.

july or august

the whale sharks stay from juny 15th to september 15th so you would be very unlucky if you wouldn't see them before that time.

If you look for peace, during the week you will be better than during the weekend.

Holbox is a paradise, there is less people than in isla mujeres, and is further away from playa del carmen and cancun. The sunsets are incredible and the sky at night is unbelievable. You will also be able to see the "luminiscencia" which is something magical, the "plancton"(see weed that whale sharks eat) glows at night and when the moon is little and you get in the sea at night it feels like magic!

36.

apartment for rent

are there apartments/casitas/etc for rent for 2 months at a time? For a furnished one bedroom/studio (low/no frills) what can I expect to pay (ballpark figure)? Which location of the island is best for fewer biting insects and/or snorkeling/playing in the sand. Thank YOU!!

37.

Late July accomodations, how to find?

So far, I'm finding that rental cost goes way up mid-june to mid-sept. Is this what others are finding, too? What are your suggestions for a moderately priced place? Kitchenette? I understand that finding A/C is uncertain; due to the availability of electrical service (lack of). Is that correct? Does the sea breeze provide enough cooling? How much does it matter whether or not the place is directly on the beach and/or good access to the sea breeze?

Lastly, is the bay on the inland side of Holbox a good place to take a teenager for some basic, no frills fishing?

38.

apartment for rent

It depends on what you are looking for, you can find very cheap apartments for rent that are furnished (not with too much style but enough to make a living) this ones have a price of 300 usd per month, if you want something at the beach the price is much higher, there are apartments for 80 usd per night but they don't have kitchen.

For insects,... you just need to be patient and buy off insect repelent. My first 2 months where horrible, now they got used to me and they only bite me on what we call "mosquito time" 7 am and 7 pm.

39.

late july accomodations

The cost goes up because it is high season, almost all the average hotels have ac. Which is very useful if you plan to come during the summer.if you let me know your budget i inform you about the best accomodations you can have.

40.

reply re budget for Holbox summer accomodations

$60/night is the goal, but Holbox high season seems to be more than that. Could go up to $100/night. At $100 or more, we would probably have a much shorter stay on Holbox. Need a/c, or really really great ventilation & mozzie nets with no holes. Your recommendations are welcomed!

41.

there is a new hotel called

there is a new hotel called casa lupita that is located on the main square of holbox, it has all the facilities ac, tv, warm water and a good mexican restaurant. you can ask for rates at casalupitaholbox@gmail.com
you can look for la palapa hotel or holbox dream too, this ones are located in front of the beach but they are a little bit more expensive 100-150 usd aprox.

42.

holbox carnaval

I want to share with you the happiness with which all the people of holbox are organizing the carnaval.

Every group of friends get ready with fancy dresses and critical songs to sing and dance around the town for 4 days. The songs are always about something that has happened during the year in holbox, and they are very funny as it is the way of telling the truth about everything with a very good sense of humor. The party goes along march 7th to 11th, children don't have classes and there is a party mood everywhere.

They name a carnaval queen which looses her place the last day when the ugly king comes out and takes her out.

It is great to live this experience and this year looks like it is going to be much more fun, everybody is looking forward to the party days!!

43.

The buses of Mexico

The buses of Mexico have undergone a major upgrade starting in the early 1990s. First Class coaches and 'Luxury' (Lujo) Coaches are the most common for intercity travel. Those are usually non-stop, or make only 1 or 2 stops.

Second class buses tend to stop in most villages. They are not the 'chicken buses' you may have read about back in the 60s or 70s.

The buses are quite professionally run. Luxury class includes free coffee, tea and beverages on board and increased legroom. First class and 'Luxury' buses usually show a movie, which is often in English. (Personally I'd prefer if they didn't show a movie, but bus companies seem to think that passengers want to see movies.)

44.

One thing that i love is

One thing that i love is that before the bus leaves the ADO (bus station) there is a boy that jumps at the bus and offers you drinks, chips and candy, it is very comfortable. Also when you go through little towns sometimes a couple of women go in the bus and offer you homemade sopes at a very reasonable price.

45.

scuba

Is this an area for a dedicated, hard core scuba diver? I understand about no scuba with the whale sharks, but what other types of diving is there? Is there any shore diving or any hotel that has a dive shop or shore diving?

46.

Scuba

Hola! Holbox is not the place for scuba, sorry to let you down. The place would be on the Caribbean side of the peninsula, all the way from Playa del Carmen to Belize... Cozumel is the best, but I sure had great dives in Playa del Carmen.

47.

ADO vs. shuttle...safe?

Hi there! My husband and I are coming to Holbox for the week of July 30 thru Aug 6. We have traveled to Mexico many times in the past few years...Cozumel, Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen, Cabo...Our favorite being Isla Mujeres. First time for Holbox and super excited! We are looking for tranquility, not parties! Very familiar with Cancun airport as well. My husband is worried about the safety of the public bus to Chiquila from Cancun. Is the bus as safe as private transfer? And I also worry about luggage on the bus...is taking large suitcases on the bus okay? And for accomodations we MUST have beach, air conditioning, and would love a refridgerator(mini is fine)...please suggest! No need for luxury, just comfortable with a view. Thanks in advance for the help.

48.

Ado - the way to go.

I have been to Holbox a few times and love the place. The bus is perfectly safe and no problem at all. When you come out of the airport doors (where all those people are standing around with signs and trying to convince you to take their over-priced travel options), turn towards the right. You will see a few large modern buses. I think they are grey with red or pink stripes. Ask which one goes to the Cancun bus station and pay your 75 pesos to the driver. The buses leave really often and go directly to the bus station. Don't let anyone talk you into any other options (they will try - they will tell you the bus won't leave for 2 hours, etc. DO NOT BELIEVE THEM). Once you arive at the Cancun bus station, go inside and ask at the ticket window for the next bus to Chiquilla. They leave every few hours. The buses are clean, air conditioned and quite comfortable. Yes, it will take a bit longer to get to there than if you paid someone $150 to get you there, but it's really worth saving that money and spending it on a whale shark trip or a nice dinner on the island. Ask the bus driver to tell you when you get to Chiquila. When you get off the bus in Chiquila, you will see the ferry dock. It's about 1/2 block walk. The ferry leave about every hour. Once off the ferry, catch a golf cart taxi to take you to your hotel (don't try to walk with suitcases - it's just not worth it).

As far as places to stay on the island, I would recommend Hotelito Tortugas or Dreams because I have stayed there; but most of the hotels are pretty similar. Check trip advisor for the reviews. Check to be sure their is A/C. Some hotels do not have A/C. Most places are clean, basic and reasonably priced. It's not a big island - and it is definitely laid back. The beach is awesome and the people are great. I wish I were going this summer! Have a great time. Take some bug spray just in case.

49.

private transfer is much

private transfer is much comfortable than the bus. try to deal with a taxi driver outside the bus station before getting the bus.

50.

Re: One thing that i love is

They offer you homemade sopes.... But unfortunately no foreigner knows what they are.

51.

re. sopes

firsts whale sharks in holbox

Firsts whale sharks have been seen at holbox!!!

53.

Merida to Holbox

I realize this question has been asked before but I have not seen it recently and am wondering if there may be any changes or new info. We are a family of 4 traveling from Merida to Holbox the end of June. Are there any new bus options beside the 11:30 pm bus? We can't decide if we want to rent a car and let it sit for days in a parking lot or if we should look for another way of getting there. With the increase in the Whale Shark awareness maybe there are more hired drivers from Merida?

54.

re. merida to holbox

I am trying to confirm the other bus option, with Noreste, departing Merida at 10.30 am and arriving Chiquila at 4.30 pm, cost is 140 pesos, from their station at Calle 67 x 50, but they are not answering their phone (999-924-6355). The other option would be with a private transportation service such as Yucatan Connection or Lawson's Driving Service.

55.

re. merida to holbox

The 10.30 am departure is still in effect, every day, departing Merida at 10.30 am and arriving Chiquila at 4.30 pm, cost is 140 pesos, from their station at Calle 67 x 50. Phone (999-924-6355).

56.

taxi

There are some taxi drivers that can take you from merida to holbox for around 1500 pesos.

Between 4 people it is not as expensive, and it is much faster. By bus will take more than 6 hours, by taxi it will be 3 or 3.5 hours.

Here there is the phone number of the taxi i always call. His name is eliazara, i think he does not speak too much english.

I hope this helps you!!

57.

re. taxi

Thanks Olga! What is the phone number please? Is he in Holbox or Merida? Saludos, Juanita, Yucatan Today

58.

taxi driver

Sorry, it was late yesterday and i fogot the most important part,...
Eliazara: 9841286916 it's a cell phone,.... He is very reliable, at least the times that i have requested a taxi service.

59.

Whale Sharks still there?

There's a May 9th post saying that whale sharks have been seen. Is this earlier than usual? We're planning to be there at the end of July, and hope to see them. What do you think?

60.

july whalesharks

The official season goes from june 15th to september 15th. On july is a wonderful time to come and visit them.

This year they arrived one month in advance, although there are not as many as in july or august,... Try and make your days match with the small moon, you will be able to see the luminiscencia, it,s magical!!! Plancton glows at night!!

61.

bathrooms on public bus

Hi
I am trying to arrange a trip for my parents and myself. My father is worried about 3.5 hours on a public bus. Does it have a bathroom? And does it really take 3.5 hours or is it longer?

62.

re. bathrooms

The bus from Merida to Chiquila takes 6 hours, not 3.5 hours!!! See comments No. 55 and 56 above. BUT...the reason it takes 6 hours is that it makes several stops along the way at bus stations with bathrooms.

63.

bathrooms

It would take 3 hours from cancun to chiquila.

Buses do not have a bathroom, but the bus makes a couple of stops, just ask the driver to wait for you,...

Dont expect too much of those bathrooms,...

64.

December in Holbox

We are planning a trip to Holbox in early December. Are the beaches and water similar to Cancun? Can we snorkel right off the beach? We went to Chixculub a couple of years ago and loved the town but hated the Mosquitos due to the lagoon? Is the problem as bad in Holbox? Do they have any houses or condos on the beach for rent and if so do they have screens on the windows AND DOORS?

65.

Holbox

1. Holbox does not have a coral reef, this no snorkeling like the Caribbean side.
2. We did not experience mosquitos in December of last year. I think it depends on the prevailing winds, etc. We have heard they can be bad there, but usually only at night. Take some deet, just in case. As I said, we stayed a week, and didn't experience any problems.
3. Some beautiful apts/condos to rent right on the beach, around $100/night.
Try http://www.holboxapartments.com/apartments.html We didnt stay there, but it looked great from our kayak.
Also, many nice hotels. It is a wonderful, unspoiled island, last of its kind in this part of Mexico. Very safe, great locals, good food, etc. Go before it gets ruined by overdevelopment (see Isla Mujeres)

66.

december in holbox

The water is calmer than in cancun, it is perfect for children.

The best place to snorkel is cabo catoche. It is one hour away by boat.

There are houses for rent and there are nice hotels too. The mosquitos are not so strong in december, although you will need a repelent, I always carry one in my bag just in case.

67.

Whale sharks still in the area?

We are planning to be in Holbox on Wednesday, Sept 20. Are the whale sharks still in the area as of today?

68.

Festival del Caribe

Este 17 y 18 de Noviembre se celebra el festival del Caribe y en Holbox tendremos al Grupo Niche, Pie Desnudo, orquesta canela!!!!

The caribbean festival is happening on november 17th and 18th. We will have in Holbox groups as Grupo Niche, Pie Desnudo and Orquesta Canela. You cannot miss it!!!!!!

69.

re. festival

What time? And where? Thanks Olga!

70.

taxi from CC airport to Chiquila?

what would be the cost of taking a taxi from Cancun airport to Chiquila?

71.

taxi

From the airport is very expensive, around 350 usd.

I recommend you to take a bus to the ado (bus central station) and from there make a deal with a taxi driver for no more than 1200 pesos.

Best regards,

Olga

72.
