Holbox Island

holbox.jpg

Holbox (hol-bosh) is an island located near the northeastern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo. It is part of the Yum Balam ecological reserve, separated from land by the Yalahua Lagoon. Holbox is 26 miles long and beautiful seashells are constantly washing up onto its fine white sand beaches. The jade green Gulf of Mexico waters that bathe these beaches are beautiful and swimmer-friendly. The water is usually calm and shallow at the beaches, making it a great place for swimming with children.

On this island there is only one small village, also called Holbox, where less than 1,500 people make their home. The streets are sand lined with brightly painted wooden houses. The majority of the people are fishermen. They catch large red snapper, bonitos and grouper. These fishermen also go after lobster and octopus in season. As you can imagine, the seafood sold in the local restaurants is fresh and delicious. Treat yourself here to some of the world's best ceviche, a cold dish with fish, shrimp or other shellfish marinated with tomatoes, vinegar and oil, cilantro, and garlic.

The Yalahua Lagoon separates Holbox from the mainland. Find a local driver to take you on his boat, and explore the wonders of this mangrove lagoon.

One place to visit is Isla Pájaros, an island where the birds come to sleep at night. Approximately 140 species of birds live in the Yucatán and visit this island at different times of the year.

Many are permanent residents. Humans are not allowed on the island...only on the observation towers...and it can only be reached by boat. Because these rules have been respected by man, the birds are not afraid, so it is possible to actually get pretty close to them.

There are several hotels, from small hostels to three-star hotels on the beach. You will find restaurants with delicious typical cuisine along with national and international dishes. Try some lobster pizza.

To get around Holbox there are golf carts that can be rented by the hour. If you see a Bassett Hound, his name is "Maclovio" and he really is a nice guy!!! He's even been known to get in the golf cart with people for the ride!

Summer attraction

For several years now, whale sharks have been coming to the northern tip of the Yucatán peninsula to feed and mate during the months of June through September. Tourism based on whale shark watching has increased dramatically in the last few years and government agencies have taken steps to protect these magnificent animals so that the species will not be harmed and so they will continue to return to this area. For that reason, Holbox has recently been named by the Mexican government as the only port that can offer trips to swim with the whale sharks, and there are strict rules against scuba equipment being used to view them in the area. Local guides have been trained to give tours that are as safe for the whale sharks as they are for their human visitors. Read our article on whale sharks in Holbox to get a more profound insight about the experience as well as information for tours.

FROM CHIQUILA BACK TO MERIDA

Hi,

I will be be be visiting Isla Holbox this November and I am concerned about how I will get back to Merida. According to the information posted the only bus to Merida departs at 5am! Is this possible? Please help.

Thanks.

02.

bus

Yes, I am sorry to say there is only one bus per day. It is the same bus in and out. It leaves merida at 11.30 pm, arrives Chiquila around 5 am, then turns around and comes back.

03.

Weather??

How well did Isla Holbox survive Hurricane Ida? Has it impacted the island in any way? Does the island have power? I am scheduled to go there on Wednesday, Nov 11th.....

04.

Ida

We have no reports of damage or power failures there. You should be fine!

05.

The bus

How comfortable is the bus from Merida? Is sleep possible or is it filled with chickens and singing all night?

06.

THE BUS

I thought the same. The second class buses in my opinion are comfortable - not at all chicken and goat buses. However they make stops and the ride can be bumby sometimes. I met a few travelers who took the night bus to Holbosh and they were totally fine with it.

I did make it to Isla Holbosh by way of Cancun. I took a 7am ADO bus from Merida to a bus station in Cancun, then a second class (not sure if Mayab or Oriente line) to Chiquila - then a ferry to the Holbosh.

I was traveling all day, which I did not mind because I really enjoyed the scenery. I checked into my hotel around 5pm that same day.

Good Luck

Merida to Holbox

Would it be possible to take a car and driver from Merida to the ferry. I think there are several ferries during the day??

08.

Ferry to Holbox

The ferry runs all day from Chiquila (6 am, 8 am, 10 am, 11 am, 12 am, 2 pm, 4 pm, 5 pm,Last ferry = 7 pm) I haven't done the bus from Merida to Chiquila, but have taken the bus from Cancun to Chiquila and back quite a few times. Very comfortable and no problems. The ferry dock is next to the bus stop in Chiquila.

You can also contact your Holbox hotel and they can help with arranging a driver from Merida. We did this when we stayed at Miwimbi and it was very reasonably priced ($65 USD pp for 2 people) from Cancun airport all the way to the hotel doorstep). We did this going to the island the first time we visited because we just weren't sure of what to expect. After that we did the bus thing, because the bus is much much much cheaper.

09.

octopus season question

Can you tell me when octopus fishing season is? Thanks...

10.

season

The octopus fishing season in Yucatan and Campeche is Aug. 1 to Dec. 15.

11.

Bugs

What time of year are the mosquitos (or whatever the biting bugs are) bad?

12.

mosquitos

Mosquitos thrive on moisture, so they are worse during the rainy season, which is normally June through October. We seem to have more rain in the winter months than we used to, so they can appear at any time of the year, but they also don't like the cold, so even when it rains in the winter there are fewer. Be sure to travel with mosquito repellant no matter when you come, keep it with you all the time, and you will be fine. They are also worse at dawn and dusk and they are attracted to dark clothing.

Whale Sharks/ Manta Rays Returning to Holbox in 2010?

Our family is planning a trip to Holbox during the week of May 4, 2010. While it may be early, have the whale sharks and manta ray arrived?

14.

re. whale sharks/manta rays

As far as we know they have not arrived yet. But they may appear during your visit. It would be early but you never know!

15.

whale sharks

are the whale sharks there in early september? is the season very stormy then?

16.

re. whale sharks

Normally the season for the whale sharks is from May 15 to Sep. 15, but of course this is nature so there are never any guarantees! The weather can range from perfection to hurricane...our hurricane season is from June 1-Nov. 30. It is likely that there would be afternoon thunderstorms in any case, but they are usually brief.

Akumal to Holbock?

Hello,

I will be traveling with my daughter to stay at the Grand Palladium Colonial in July. I would very much like to take a day trip out to Holbock. What would be the fastest and easiest way to get there from Akumal, and what should I expect to pay? Thanks!
Ellie

19.

re. akumal to holbox

You can try this tour company: http://www.holboxtravel.com/

20.

:)

Thank you very much! Since we will bein Akumal - over an hour south of Canucn, and Holbock is north of Cancun, if it is too far for a day trip. I am wondering Cozumel would be a better day trip but I have heard so many great things about Holbock.... Any suggestions?

Thanks again!

Ellie

re. akumal to holbox

Hola, Holbox would be far for a day trip, but do check in with the website I gave you above. They specialize in tours there and have departures from Cancun etc. Rene is the owner and he will have all the answers for you. Cozumel would be closer but obviously is a very different experience.

22.

Thanks!

Thanks Juanita. I visited the site and will give them a call. I appreciate the info. Have a wonderful day.

Ellie
