Golf Club of Yucatán

golf-club_1.jpg

Nestled in the jungle of the Yucatán on what was once the grounds of Dzibilchaltún, is the Golf Club of Yucatán.

Open seven days a week with 18 holes and a par 72, Club de Golf de Yucatán is located just off the Mérida-Progreso highway. If you are visiting for a just a day or are one of the lucky snowbirds that live along the coast in Progreso, Chicxulub, Chelem or Telchac Puerto, and are going to be here for a few months, the club is open to you. With a monthly membership (valid up to three months), you can use all the facilities that include equipment rental, carts, and caddies, plus tennis, a pool, gym, steam baths and a restaurant bar that is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You will also find a putting green, a driving range and the Pro-shop.

La Ceiba Golf Course on the Mérida-Progreso highway accepts walk-ons.

Prices for a round of golf:
Green Fee: $1250
Golf Cart: $400
Clubs: $280
All prices in pesos.

The sport of golf was brought to the Yucatan in 1969 when the visionary architect Felix Mier y Terán (father of our publisher) and Mr. Vicente Erosa got together, bought the land, designed the course and then built some homes that were the beginning of the development that is built between the greens and fairways. These two gents advertised in American golf magazines with the idea of bringing retired Americans to the Yucatán. A cute colonial home with a central courtyard along the main avenue on a lot that measured 30 meters by 100 meters went for $33,000 dollars back then.

Bought up by the retired Americans, the golf club and residential area, named Club de Golf La Ceiba, became a reality.

In 1988 Mr. Trino Molina bought the club, injected some serious capital, and has made the club what it is today - an important place in Yucatán for families and golfers alike.

Monthly fees - Ceiba Golf Club

Could you please forward this to the appropriate person who could advise me as to what the monthly membership fees will be for this winter for visitors.
Mucho gracias!

Please forward the fee schedule for monthly fees. I hope to go down to Medida area for Mid January to Mid March, 2012 depending on the fees for golfing. Thanks

Membership Fees

I live there in la Ceiba, membership is 8,000 Pesos annually + a monthly fee of 3,000 pesos. I'm not sure they have temporary memberships for just a few months, but I can ask next time I go play.

The prices indicated per game in this article are still correct:
Prices for a round of golf:
Green Fee: $1250
Golf Cart: $400
Clubs: $280
All prices in pesos.

Thanks Steve! We are also trying to get this info for everyone who has asked.

fees for a month of golf?

I am also going to be in Merida for month of Feb and wondering if it will be worth it to bring clubs. Price per round as posted seems too steep, but if there is a monthly rate which would make cost per round more reasonable I would consider it. I see others are thinking along the same lines but have not seen a response yet. Help!

Temporary Memberships

I've asked the administration and here are the membership options:

1. Lifetime membership which is 40,000 pesos one time + 3,000 pesos a month (includes access to your spouse and children).

2. Yearly membership, which is 8,000 pesos per year and 3,000 pesos per month (includes access to your spouse and children).

3. Pay-per-game

4. Maria Jose Puerto, membership administrator, confirmed a price of 3,300 pesos per person / month for temporary membership. So that would be 6,600 for a couple. Doesn't include cart or clubs. Gives you same access as a regular full time member.

You need an address here and a "comprobante de domicilio" which is an electricity or phone bill of your address in Mexico. I know it's obvious but just to make it clear, membership is not required when you pay per game. Nine holes is around 750 pesos I believe. Prices indicated in this article are still up to date.

You do not need a membership to use the driving range. Price is 35 pesos for a bucket of 50 balls. Balls are not included even when you have a membership. They let you practice out of the carpet so you can practice with real divots, hard lie or rough.

Dress code is quite relaxed for a private club, shorts allowed, I’ve seen a lot of people playing with the polo untucked and I even use clean cargos and untucked during very hot days for comfort due to the extreme climate during the summer months.

Note that there's an excellent driving range as well in Merida called Golf Zone that will lend you clubs and it has bar service, so no need to go La Ceiba if you only want to practice and enjoy a cold drink.

golf fees

Thanks for the updates on fees. One question, though. I noted that a utility bill from the address where we are staying in Merida is needed. This did not seem to be a problem, although now that I have read more on Mexican regulations I understand that this is meant to show that we have a permanent residence. Since we are only going to be in Merida for one month and will not have our name on any local phone bill, etc. will we still be able to take out a membership for the month we are there? Obviously this will make a difference, since if we cannot avail ourselves of a monthly membership we may decide not to bring our clubs.

11.

Comprobante

The "comprobante de domicilio" doesn't need be under your name, it can be a phone or electricity bill from the house you're renting and most owners should provide it to you without problems.

Please note that this was a requirement for a full time membership, pretty sure that their rules regarding this requirement may be more slack regarding temporary visitors.

To make sure, I would give them a call, the phone number is on the web page. You should be able to find someone to help you in english. There's quite a lot of tourists playing during the winter months I don't see why they would restrict themselves of additional income by being strict with the snowbirds.

12.

Comprobante

Thanks for that Steve! We are looking forward to a month in Merida next Feb. and hope to get a lot of golf in over that time.

Le Cieba Golf Course

Hi...my mother is visiting me in Merida until the end of May and she wanted to play a round or two every week or so. I of course took her to Le Cieba to check out the facility and get the prices. We met with the manager, Mr Perez and he gave my mom a little tour of the course. When we asked about playing on the course he stated that we MUST become a member at a cost (because my mom would only be playing from Sept to May each year) for a lifetime membership of 35,000.00 pesos and a monthly fee of 1250.00 pesos, she would then have access to the entire facility but I don't believe it included a cart,(this was for part of the year only). We were never told that she could "play by the day" at any time during our meeting. I am very courious about who the you have received your info from Steve? I have tried to contact Mr Perez again since reading the posts here but have been unable to speak with him and he has not returned my calls. There was never a mention of having to prove my residency or provide a CFE bill or other utility bill. Do you know how I can get an accurate fee schedule? Many thanks!

Response to Terry T.

Terry, I live in la Ceiba. 2 weeks ago we had guests and we played 9 holes on saturday, and 9 hole son Sunday. I can confirm they each paid for 9 holes. They never had to subscribe or anything, because they were paying a 9 hole fee.

Regarding membership, unless they have changed rules, in my case, I'm still paying monthly and the charge is being applied to my credit card monthly automatically, and the information regarding temporary membership is from 2011. Regarding proof of residency, I'm guessing that because temporary memberships are usually given to temporary members (Canadian/Americans) that the residency bill is not necessary. To make sure I would just call the administration, the phone number on the article is still up to date if I compare it to my January membership newsletter. From US/Canadian you will need to dial 011 52 999 922 0053 (011 For international, 52 is Mexico Country code, 999 is Merida Area code).

17.

La Cieba

Steve, thank you again for replying to my inquire. I will again call La Cieba regarding the cost of the green fee's. I might not have received all the information from Mr. Perez when we were there. Perhaps he assumed that we were interested in the membership cost and nothing else. I live in Merida year round and my mother will be visiting in the winter months only every year, so paying by the game would be best for her. Thank you again for all the information.
Sincerely,
Terry T.

Green fees for LaCeiba

I have been told that LaCeiba has a discounted rate for 18 holes after 2 P.M..Is that true ?We have a group of 6 to 8 golfers that want to play at
