Galeria de la Luz
For the last several years Mérida has seen a rapid and dynamic rate of growth: from both the commercial and cultural points of view. New malls and plazas have opened their doors while others are in the construction process. The fact that upscale stores have opened, stores with internationally known brands, shows that new times are near and that there is an important consumer sector.
At the same time, a dozen universities have opened career majors related to culture, the arts, and the humanities. There is even a new University of the Arts that has recently been inaugurated. A new, young, cultured generation is in formation. And the abandoned and derelict buildings in the downtown Historical Center are a thing of the past. Each and every day these buildings are being bought, remodeled and lived in by people from other parts of Mexico and foreigners who obviously possess cultural interests. This is another sector that consumes, but not just anything; this sector is hungry for the arts.
Nevertheless, this city that is renewing its image and receiving new people, was missing something: a commercial gallery that was properly established and offering art by local and international artists. This is how the Galería de la Luz became a part of the dynamic Santa Ana neighborhood. Inaugurated this past December, Galería de la Luz presented a show by four Cuban artists who have acquired international fame in the past decade.
Nothing but success could be expected with this show because it is here that first-class products are offered under the right conditions. Everything is up to the standards of the best galleries worldwide. Galería de la Luz plans to organize several exhibitions per year, both individual and collectively, showing different themes, styles and disciplines. They also offer the service of installing the acquired pieces no matter how far away and with utmost security.
Everyone is celebrating this cultural happening and we are all waiting for its consolidation. We await your visit where you will be well attended - your cultural enjoyment is assured. Ah! And don't forget that when you acquire a piece of art you are not just satisfying a simple desire or adding one more object to your house or office, you are also making an investment because art is a liquid asset. You are not only obtaining something for your spiritual and aesthetic joy, you are obtaining a piece that will have a permanent economic growth.
In continuing with their mission of being a space where contemporary, vanguard art is shown and sold, they are known for not only showing important international artists such as Agustín Bejarano (Cuba), Rigoberto Mena (Cuba), Roberto Diago (Cuba), Carlos Quintana (Cuba), but also for promoting young Yucatecan artisits such as Alonso Maza.
Galería de la Luz is showing the new works of artists Agustín Bejarro and a series of drawings by the known and respected Cuban artist René Portocarrero. René Portocarrero (1912 – 1985) was essentially a self-taught artist who received many national and international awards for his paintings as well as various Biennale awards such as the Sambre Award from Sao Paulo. Presently, his works are being shown in galleries in the US, Europe and South America.Galería de la Luz awaits your visit to this warm space where there is a mixture of the colonial and the contemporary.
