Festival de la Ciudad
More than 1,000 artists in more than 200 events from January 5 to 30, 2012 will deck out the celebrations for the 470th anniversary of the founding of Mérida, Yucatán, where there is an expected attendance of approximately 250,000 people for all the events.
The Festival de la Ciudad recovers and strengthens our folklore, combining it with the talent of local and artists from the invited guest country of Colombia. You can enjoy dance, music, theater, arts, and visual arts.
Theaters, cultural centers, parks, neighborhoods and communities will be the forums where the region’s cultural wealth and the guest country will merge to engage thousands of people.
The Festival begins the night of January 5, with the traditional “Alborada”, waking up the city to the voice of hundreds of singers who serenade our beautiful city on the eve of its anniversary: a procession with beautiful Yucatecan trova songs, starting at Santa Lucia Park and continuing to the Palacio Municipal, culminating with the ringing of the bells at midnight so that everyone, in one voice, can sing “Las Mañanitas” to the birthday girl.
The festival will include: musical events in theaters and different neighborhoods, theatrical events in theaters and different points of the city, dance events in theaters and different points of the city, multidisciplinary events in theaters and different parts of the city, plus 68 traditional events.
