Feria Artesanal Municipal “Tunich”
10th Feria Artesanal Municipal “Tunich”
La Feria Artesanal Municipal Tunich (July 22-31, 2011) brings together 155 crafts artists from Mérida and nearby communities. Grand opening July 22 at 8 pm in the main plaza of Dzitya. The state of Mexico will be the invited guest participant. Folkloric dances will be shown.
Many of the handicrafts produced today still use the original manufacturing techniques, and because of that, they are an important part of our culture. Yucatán is one of the states where the manufacture of embroidered garments is known and admired, especially in native clothing; nowadays the artisans are innovating other items, including things for the home such as towels, table linens, sheets, cushions, etc. As well, these artists are known for a wide range of Yucatecan crafts from hammocks, pottery and jewelry, to plants and traditional cosmetics.
Within the municipality of Mérida is found the Comisaría de Dzityá, a town where the annual Feria takes place, and where the artisans have dedicated themselves for generations to the preservation of the handicraft traditions in the manufacture of products using stone and wood. The organization of the artisans and their work in collaboration with the Ayuntamiento of Mérida makes Tunich into a display window for the diffusion of wonderful handicrafts. Every day they create unique pieces, useful handicraft objects and carved works which are under the guidelines of new architectural designs.
The Feria Artesanal Municipal Tunich, in the Comisaría de Dzityá, Yucatán, integrates 155 artisans of Mérida and other nearby communities, who with different materials, colors and designs, and tremendous creativity, offer us a range of beautiful options.
Tunich offers a relaxing space for visitors and families. There will be children's events and games for kids, as well as a fashion show of typical clothing from both Mérida and the invited state, in the special projects area...not to mention lots of snacks and Yucatecan food.
Free transportation to Dzitya with stops at the Plaza Grande (Calle 60 side), Santa Lucia Park, and Hotel Hyatt (corner of Calle 60 and Av. Colón). Departures from Plaza Grande on Mon-Sat. at 5 pm, 7 pm, 9 pm, and Sunday at 10 am, 12 pm, and 2 pm, and at 15 minute intervals at the other two stops.
