CLOSED-DOOR DINNERS AT CASA LECANDA
Casa Lecanda Boutique Hotel has joined with renowned Chef Paulina Perabeles to offer culinary art in the form of closed-door dinners: they will offer certain dinner dates for up to 14 guests, on a first-come-first-serve basis, or you can work with the hotel to arrange a date for a dinner of your own for four to 14 guests; you need to request your date at least a week in advance. If your group is smaller than 14, the hotel may open the date up to accommodate up to a total of 14 including your party, always maintaining the events small & intimate. The concept of a closed-door dinner refers to the fact that the dinners are limited to a small group; once the limited number of seats are reserved, it is closed to further reservations. It is somewhere between a private dinner party and a restaurant. This is a new way to sample delicious regional cuisine. Both visitors and locals will enjoy the fusion and creative touch of Chef Paulina in an intimate setting with refined yet personal service. Casa Lecanda expects to build a special clientele, and maintain the harmony within the house. You will feel special at these dinners, whether you reserve your own dinner or attend dinner on a pre-set date; Casa Lecanda gives special attention to the quality and presentation of the foods as well as the wines. Hotel owner Stefano Marcelletti will be present for these dinners and personally interact with the guests. Calle 47 x 54 y 56, Centro. Tel. 928-0112. www.casalecanda.com (posted Nov. 15, 2011)

The goal of the Composting Task Force is to introduce people and organizations to the benefits of composting and to encourage and assist those people/organizations in setting up their own successful composting areas. “MADRE: PERILOUS JOURNEYS WITH A SPANISH NOUN”
For those who love Mexico and Mexican Spanish, this book is a must. Author Liza Bakewell is a linguistic anthropologist at Brown University. Twenty-two years ago, while riding in a taxi in Mexico City, she saw a graffiti message: A TODA MADRE O UN DESMADRE. All mother or a dis-mother? No, Mexican slang for “fabulous or a disaster.” She began investigating other “madre” words and phrases, and with the aid of Mexican friends and acquaintances, she learned much more than language: she unearthed an entire cultural phenomenon. The results are fascinating, funny, and full of hidden meaning. lizabakewell.com (posted Nov. 15, 2011)
MATT ELLIS RELEASES "RIVER TOO WIDE" MUSIC VIDEO
Matt Ellis recently launched his 2nd music video from “Births, Deaths & Marriages” today, with a nod to the “Día de los Muertos” celebration. The track, a duet featuring his wife V, is an uptempo, Americana rocker that became the critically acclaimed album’s best-selling song shortly after its release. Shot in the singers’ Venice Beach backyard, friends gathered to dress, act in and shoot the clip over an evening late Summer. Directed and edited by Ellis, “River Too Wide” is the follow up to, “Heart Of Mine” – the lead single from, “Births, Deaths…” which scored 3rd place in The International Songwriting Competition’s, “Best Video” category earlier this year. Inspiration for the video flowed easily from Matt & V’s love for Mexico and its history. Before relocating to Los Angeles, the Australian couple spent several months in a small fishing village in the Yucatan, Mexico, where Matt wrote the majority of his previous album, “Tell the People”. It was during this time that Ellis began experimenting with duets and encouraged his wife to lend her voice to his songs. Ellis’ wife V is a collector of Dia de los Muertos folkart and so it was apt that as a first wedding anniversary gift, Matt hand-crafted a calavera (or “skull”) diorama. In it he recreated the scene of their nuptials on a friend’s sheep farm back in Australia. That unique gift has become their own ritual. The pair spend each anniversary together, creating a new calavera diorama, representing the most significant events of the year passed. They intend to have a collection of calaveras symbolizing each year of marriage. http://mattellis.com/blog/?p=559 (posted Nov. 15, 2011)

Message from Monique: "Greetings to you! I hope you had a fabulous, relaxing summer vacation. I look forward to seeing your smiling face at my bakery -- also home of El Mercado Fresco de Slow Food Yucatán -- on Saturdays from 8 to 1. We are located at Calle 31 #93A x Calle 12 in Colonia Chuburna de Hidalgo, contra esquina del Super Farahon. My bakery is also open on Friday nights from 4 to 8. And now for the news of change. There is always change. Brace yourself. It´s going to be ok. Ok? As of this November, my little bakery will no longer be located at the lovely quinta where it´s been steadily growing for the past three years. I will keep you posted as the location of our new site materializes, which it will. I´m certain it will be a place where the vision can grow as it needs to grow and do what it needs to do. I want to assure you that Monique´s Bakery will not stop production due to the move and the Slow Food Market will always have a home with me wherever I go. It will be a new place but the breads and foods will always be the same superior quality no matter what. Now, more than ever, I would like to count on your support. Your purchases at my bakery will help us in our pending move. Thanks!" Monique Duval moniqueduval@aol.com (posted Sept. 2, 2011)
FLORIDA-PROGRESO FERRY UPDATE
The latest news...per an email we received from Tamara, who is in touch with the investors: "I know many of you are getting anxious to book flights and make plans for your trips to Mexico this fall and winter and were looking forward to the possibility of taking the ferry this year. It was hoped sales would begin this fall for launch early next year but unfortunately the ferry service will not be launched in 2011, however, it is proposed for sometime in 2012. The launch date announcement will be made once all the required agreements have been made. In the meantime United Caribbean Lines continue to meet with governments and officials in the US and Mexico in an attempt to facilitate a speedy launch. They are also working on an abbreviated website for interested parties. As soon as I have a launch date or firm information I will forward another email. I know many of you will be disappointed by this news but unfortunately we will all have to keep waiting a little longer. In the meantime I have been asked by United Caribbean Lines to collect more data and answer more questions allowing them to use the information to craft programs designed specifically for the expatriate and snow bird markets. I apologize if it seems like some of the questions are the same as the previous survey but this time we are looking for details and specifics, so please provide as much information as you feel comfortable sharing. Even if you never plan to use the ferry, please complete as much of the survey as possible, since we need youR input as well. If you live six or more months a year in Mexico or any other country in Central or South America please follow this link and complete the Survey entitled Expatriate Ferry Survey. If the link doesn't work please copy and paste it into your browser.

Both surveys will be open until September 16th, 2011, so please respond as quickly as possible. Please feel free to forward this email to anyone else you think should complete the surveys. Thank you in advance for your participation. We look forward to your responses."

Home Caregivers
I am researching the possibility of opening a home caregiver/hospice service along the gulf coast area of Progreso for expats. I will be staying in Progreso during the months of January & February 2012. Please email me if you believe there may be a need for my services in the near future. I would be willing to meet with you to discuss any options. I am a state licensed & certified nursing assistant in Virginia and have been self-employed providing home care & hospice services for over 10 years.

hospice/care
You have a great idea. I hope you can negotiate all the Mexican administration systems to get it going as a business.
I was at a conference for expats all over Mexico last weekend, and the need for services like this emerged as a major theme.
I would be delighted to meet with you, but I have no practical advice to give you - just support. But please contact me if you wish.

re. home caregivers
There is probably a need for this kind of service as the resident expat community ages. There are various considerations which we, as tourist info providers, would not be your best resource for. I would suggest meeting as many expats as possible when you are here. Here are some blogs and websites to introduce you to some people who might be good resources:
