THE HACIENDAS RECEIVES 2009 WORLD SAVERS AWARDS
Condé Nast Traveler recently announced the winners for their annual World Savers awards, honoring the airlines, cruise lines, city hotels, resorts, hotel chains, and tour operators that are dedicated to saving their communities and our world (Hooray!). Their 21 judges—academics, CEOs, and philanthropists—looked at five types of initiatives: education, poverty alleviation, wildlife conservation, cultural and environmental preservation, and health. A major winner was The Haciendas, a group of five luxury hacienda hotels in Yucatan and Campeche: Haciendas Santa Rosa, San Jose, Temozon, Uayamon, and Puerta Campeche (www.thehaciendas.com). They came out winners in the “Poverty: Learning about it. Fighting it. Eradicating It” category. They employ villagers, whose Mayan ancestors had built nearby Chichén Itzá, as workers, waiters, and accountants, and help others start businesses, including folk art and massage cooperatives. The judges also loved The Haciendas in “Education: Promoting it. Funding it. Improving it.” They invest in a mobile children's library, upgrade schools, and help create computer-equipped libraries; and in “Health: Encouraging it. Providing it. Testing it.” They run medical centers in seven communities to combat diabetes, cancer, and high blood pressure. And The Haciendas came out with the highest overall score in the “Doing It All” category. As the judges said, “This Mexican company seems to be doing everything right.” (posted Oct. 7, 2009)

CHILDREN WITH NO CHRISTMAS
Jim Mann moved to the Yucatan almost 9 years ago to retire and enjoy the wonderful warmer climate that the Yucatan has to offer. After establishing several new companies in the area, he felt the need to give back to the Yucatan a part of what it had given him. Six years ago he started working with very poor families to see that the children would have new shoes and a new toy for Christmas. Last year he found 30 very poor families in a small fishing village in Chuburna, with about 50 small children who came to experience Christmas for the first time in their lives. REFLEXOLOGY
Few people are aware of the fundamental role that is played by our feet when it comes to health and healing. The object of reflexology is to stimulate a return to homeostasis, or, in other words, a state of balance. A well-known reflexologist in Mérida is Nena Mier y Terán. For the past seven years she has been treating the feet of many a Meridano and many a tourist. She comments that the majority of the tourists call her asking for relief for their hot, tired feet from all the walking they are doing on their trip. She also says they want back relief from hauling suitcases and backpacks. Locals tend to have regular weekly appointments for the sheer feeling of relaxation, contentment and well-being. SCULPTURE EXHIBIT
Joseph Kurhajec is a Wisconsin born sculptor with Slovak roots currently living between France, New York and Merida, México. Edward Bryant, art critic writes, "Joseph Kurhajec is a wild and generous artist, the creator of formidable, declarative sculptures which bite sharply into our fin de siècle complacency. A cry in the contemporary time wilderness, Kurhajec is an embracer of life, a primitivism yearner for a simpler world based on the impossible dream of basic values restored. With gusto he performs his role as expressionist wanderer, working intuitively to give form to those dark, primitive and mysterious forces within myth, legend, self, dream and belief. Independent of stylistic consensus, he creates with an individualistic raw directness of great forcefulness." If you want further information about the artist take a look in his webpage: http://www.tmfa.net/ Feel free to visit us between 8 am to 5 pm from Monday to Friday and Saturday from 8 am to 1pm. SPECIAL RECOGNITION FOR HACIENDA CHICHEN RESORT AND YAXKIN SPA
National Geographic Traveler editors have selected this hotel for their Stay List 2009, a list of the 129 best places to stay in the world. They are one of only 12 hotels selected in Mexico, and the only selection from Yucatán. Here is the summary from National Geographic: "The hotels on our Stay List 2009 don't just reflect their surroundings-they help define them," says Traveler Senior Editor Sheila Feldman Buckmaster. "What they all have in common is a transcendent vision that goes beyond traditional hotel-keeping. This mindset is what gives these hotels their sense of place. Make no mistake: you'll sense the vibe at once. And after your stay, you'll leave with the kind of insight only soulful places can provide. To find these hotels, Traveler tapped into the collected experiences of veteran journalists, inveterate road warriors, and local experts. They based their nominations on key criteria. Is the hotel engaged with the local community? Does it subscribe to sustainable practices that respect the region? Does it truly capture the spirit of its setting? Further research and detailed questionnaires winnowed hundreds of submissions down to this sweet list of 129 hotels." www.haciendachichen.com (posted April 20, 2009)

For the past seven years she has been treating the feet of many a Meridano and many a tourist. She comments that the majority of the tourists call her asking for relief for their hot, tired feet from all the walking they are doing on their trip.
