On July 1 in Paris, the Gourmand Book Awards presented "Cacao - The Roots of Chocolate" by Dominique Persoone and Jean-Pierre Gabriel, the "Best Chocolate Book in the World" award. This, in a competition in which thousands of books from all around the world participated. The 14th Gourmand World Cookbook Awards, the cookery-book equivalent of the Oscars, acknowledged the best publications from the past year. This distinction honors outstanding chocolate expert chocolatier from Bruges, Dominique Persoone, who collaborated on the book with Stephanie and Mathieu Brees from Ki'Xocolatl chocolate store on Calle 55. Citizens of Mexico now require a visa to travel to Canada. The visa requirement came into effect on July 13, 2009. Mexican citizens who plan to travel to Canada will need to apply for a visa by sending an application to the Canadian Embassy in Mexico City. This visa requirement applies to everyone who wants to visit, do business, study, or work on a temporary basis. Their consulates outside Mexico City will not provide this service. CHICHÉN ITZÁ AIRPORT
This month (April 2009) the first flight arrived from Havana to Kaua, the airport in Chichén Itzá. Viajes Divermex operates twice-weekly flights (Mondays and Fridays), departing Havana at 9 am and departing Kaua at 5:30 pm. Flight time is 1 hr. 15 min. The flights are meant to encourage tourism between Cuba and Yucatán; passengers can book flights originating at either end. The Kaua airport may soon welcome flights from other destinations as well. NEW HOTEL CONCEPT IN MÉRIDA
Like many, you have probably looked at the spectacular old buildings at the corner of Paseo de Montejo and Calle 41, and thought someone should restore them and turn them into a boutique hotel. Well, that's exactly what is happening. The two properties together measure 40 m x 40 m and the hotel called Rosas & Xocolate will have 17 rooms. European group Design Hotels is lovingly renovating every square inch and will offer some unique features including bathtubs under open roofs. The architect is Salvador Reyes Ríos, known for his hacienda restorations. The hotel will have a restaurant, spa with steam baths, gym, lounge, chocolaterie, library-bar, and an aquatic garden.
