Earth Day Merida

Forty years after the first Earth Day, April 22, 1970, the world is in greater peril than ever. While climate change is the greatest challenge of our time, it also presents an unprecedented opportunity to build a healthy, prosperous, clean energy economy now and for the future.

The Earth Day Mérida Fair is part of the international Earth Day 2010 Network that is galvanizing millions who make personal commitments to sustainability. Earth Day 2010 is a key opportunity for individuals, corporations and governments to join together and create a global green economy. This year, more than one billion people in 190 countries are taking action for Earth Day. (Information adapted from the Earth Day Network web site.)

Mérida is celebrating Earth Day on April 24th and 25th. On Saturday, the 24th, the Fair will be in García Ginerés on Calle 17 #201 x 20 & 22, a block from Las Americas Park. It will begin at 10:00 AM with a blessing of the earth in the Mayan tradition followed by a full day’s programming for all ages that goes until early evening. There will be hands-on activities, games, and films for children, exhibits, workshops, documentary short films, sale of organic/biodegradable products, sustainable services, jewelry, presentations, an environmentally friendly raffle, and food and drinks.

On Sunday, the 25th, there will be an Earth Day rally for children during the Bici Ruta and guided tours of the Ecological Park A’AK in Xcunya. Free admission both days.

Earth Day Mérida is a collaborative effort, sponsored by several entities including: Mérida Verde, Pronatura, the Parque A’AK, U Yits KA’AN (The Agriculture School in Maní) Slow Food Yucatán, Aromas Orgánicos, the Forum for the Defense of the Ecosystems of the State of Yucatán, Utopía: Comunicación Gráfica, Ecolución: Consultoría en Sustentabilidad, Yucatan Today, and more.

This event is about creating partnerships for the future, educating and raising consciousness about sustainability, and planning future actions.
