Carnaval in Merida 2013

reyes-2012_0.jpg

Mérida's Carnaval is one of the five most important in the entire Mexican republic and one of the 12 principal Carnavals in all of Latin America. From February 6-13, 2013, locals and visitors will see the local culture as they live the traditional time of Carnaval.

The Carnaval celebrations will begin with the traditional pre-school parade, with a procession of floats full of children, representing the 7 Mayan prophecies with their colorful costumes; combined with the music and fireworks they will set aside the bad humor and fill our Carnaval with light, hope, and color.

The parades of the allegorical cars and floats take place from Friday the 8th to Tuesday the 12th of February, with the presence of approximately 2500 dancers who will compete for first place on their floats, competing on the basis of costumes, choreography, interpretation, and scenic presence as qualifying criteria.

We cannot neglect to mention the traditional Regional Monday, where the different floats interpret and highlight the culture and legends of our stste, while enjoying the traditional “jarana”, showing the world the beauty of the culture and typical costumes of our city.

The Carnaval of Mérida will also include the presence of more than 30 groups which will play along the length of the parade route, on the various stages, as well as national and international artists, making the event an important one…and one which brings together magic, mysticism, dance, joy, and above all, plenty of fun.

On Wed. Feb. 13 the burial of Juan Carnaval will take place, marking an end to the festivities which we hope to share with the rest of the country and the world.

Dancing in the streets will be quite appropriate! Let your hair down! Enjoy!

Box Seat Sales

Hello,

Thank you for the information about box seat sale. You give times for ticket sales but no actual date that the sales actually start. Are box seats on sale now?

Thanks,

Dan

re. box seat sales

Ticket sales usually begin about 6 weeks prior to Carnaval...so check back with us around the end of December.

05.

Parades

From all the daily parades there are, which ones are the important ones?
Are there any that are a must to see.
This is our first time and we are planning on things to do for that week and I don't want to miss any important or must see activities while we can go and see other things around town or out of town.

06.

This is hard to advise on,

This is hard to advise on, as everyone has personal preferences! If you go to the official Carnaval website www.merida.gob.mx/carnaval and click on the tab at the top called Programa de Actividades, you will see photos from each parade from last year, along with a brief description (in Spanish). Maybe this will help! But I would think the most fun parades in terms of great costumes, etc. would be the Fantasy parade and the Regional parade, for obvious reasons (these are both nighttime parades). The climax will be on the last parade on the Mardi Gras Tuesday (a daytime parade).

07.

Carnival

Are there special stages with famous Mexican or latin bands or performers in the carnival and is there a fee for this and a schedule of who is and where?

08.

re. carnival

There are stages all along the parade route with live music on all of them. I'm not sure whether there is a list of who will be performing, but you can keep checking the official website. http://www.merida.gob.mx/carnaval/ The performances are free.

09.

hotel rooms along the parade route

(for the 17 & 18th of February 2012)

10.

balcony views of carnaval parade

The GRAN Hotel and the Piedra de Agua both have the nicest views of the carnaval parade from the balcony located in the street facing rooms. Be sure to ask!

Arriving in Merida feb 16 driving from airport

We have not been to Merida before. We arrive feb 16 at 9:30 pm. Staying at hotel casa San angel. What do we need to know about driving from airport to the hotel at that time? Will there be road closures?

12.

re. ARRIVING IN MERIDA FEB 16 DRIVING FROM AIRPORT

Hello, that day's parade is at 4 pm so it will be well over by then. No need to worry about street closures. From the airport turn right (north) toward the Centro, turn right at the zoo on Calle 59 (a sign will say to Centro) then left on Calle 60, right on Calle 47 and then the second right on Paseo Montejo, and you will see your hotel on the left at the corner of Montejo and Calle 49. Check with your hotel in advance to ask about parking...this last bit from Calle 47 to your hotel could be messed up with parade bandstands etc. Brace yourself, it is going to be noisy!

Carnaval

Thank you Juanita - you're great to respond so quickly and with such detail!

14.

Tickets

We are arriving around 10 PM on Friday, Feb. 17. Is it too late to get tickets and can we do it by internet or does it need to buy them in person. Will we still be able to get tickets on Saturday, Feb. 18 in person? Where are the seating located? Can you choose your location. Thank you in advance for your help.

15.

re. tickets

Today is the last day you can buy reserved seating. After that, you can buy general seating along the parade route starting 3 hours before parade times, and the seating will be on a first-come basis.

16.

Another ticket question

Is there a way to but them on the internet and if so how? If not how and can I buy them not being in Merida at the moment.

17.

RE. ANOTHER QUESTION

No, sorry, you have to buy them in person!

18.

Thank you

Thank you Juanita for your response. I have been trying to figure out for weeks a way to buy them, not being in Merida.

19.

re. thank you

It's too bad they don't have a way to do it online!
