Carnaval in Merida 2012

reyes-2012.jpg

Mérida's Carnaval is one of the five most important in the entire Mexican republic and one of the 12 principal Carnavals in all of Latin America. From February 15-22, 2012, locals and visitors will see the local culture as they live the traditional time of Carnaval.

THE CARNAVAL OF THE NEW ERA
For years, mankind, blind with egoism and ambition, has been dedicated to destroying and ending the world and its natural balance. Kalán, the guard of the universe, has decided to again send a meteorite to Earth, and like the first time, again the destination is Yucatán. In this meteorite Yum Kin is traveling, the priest charged with guarding the future, and with him go the 7 “pixans” who represent each of the 7 prophecies as well as the principal natural elements, which are: fire, eclipse, earth, ice, water, comet, and universe.

A meteorite will impact Earth which will cause a huge explosion of color, joy, and fun; this great impact with our planet will help to get rid of all the contamination and destruction, so that it once again shines with its unique beauty. Yum Kin will help man to renew his spirit and with this, provide the start to the great party with which the world will enter a new path with the human race; the first page of the new history of man and earth will be written as: THE CARNAVAL OF THE NEW ERA!

To make all of this possible, there will be various pre-Carnaval events in the various neighborhoods of the city, to involve all citizens in such an important party. On Feb. 3 there will be a great celebration for the coronation of the king and queen of our Carnaval, concluding on Feb. 15 with the burning of the bad mood, which is the official start to the mystery of Carnaval 2012.

The Carnaval celebrations will begin with the traditional pre-school parade, with a procession of floats full of children, representing the 7 Mayan prophecies with their colorful costumes; combined with the music and fireworks they will set aside the bad humor and fill our Carnaval with light, hope, and color.

The parades of the allegorical cars and floats take place from Friday the 17th to Tuesday the 21st of February, with the presence of approximately 2500 dancers who will compete for first place on their floats, competing on the basis of costumes, choreography, interpretation, and scenic presence as qualifying criteria.

We cannot neglect to mention the traditional Regional Monday, where the different floats interpret and highlight the culture and legends of our stste, while enjoying the traditional “jarana”, showing the world the beauty of the culture and typical costumes of our city.

The Carnaval of Mérida will also include the presence of more than 30 groups which will play along the length of the parade route, on the various stages, as well as national and international artists, making the event an important one…and one which brings together magic, mysticism, dance, joy, and above all, plenty of fun.

On Wed. Feb. 22 the burial of Juan Carnaval will take place, marking an end to the festivities which we hope to share with the rest of the country and the world.

Dancing in the streets will be quite appropriate! Let your hair down! Enjoy!

re. box seat sales

Ticket sales usually begin about 6 weeks prior to Carnaval...so check back with us around the end of December.

05.

Parades

From all the daily parades there are, which ones are the important ones?
Are there any that are a must to see.
This is our first time and we are planning on things to do for that week and I don't want to miss any important or must see activities while we can go and see other things around town or out of town.

06.

This is hard to advise on,

This is hard to advise on, as everyone has personal preferences! If you go to the official Carnaval website www.merida.gob.mx/carnaval and click on the tab at the top called Programa de Actividades, you will see photos from each parade from last year, along with a brief description (in Spanish). Maybe this will help! But I would think the most fun parades in terms of great costumes, etc. would be the Fantasy parade and the Regional parade, for obvious reasons (these are both nighttime parades). The climax will be on the last parade on the Mardi Gras Tuesday (a daytime parade).

07.

Carnival

Are there special stages with famous Mexican or latin bands or performers in the carnival and is there a fee for this and a schedule of who is and where?

08.

re. carnival

There are stages all along the parade route with live music on all of them. I'm not sure whether there is a list of who will be performing, but you can keep checking the official website. http://www.merida.gob.mx/carnaval/ The performances are free.
