Ask the U.S. Consul -
 Renewing Passports

The single most common question that we are asked by American citizens here in Mérida is "how do I renew/replace my passport?" Renewing a passport is very straightforward, if you have your old passport handy.  Simply come into the Consulate Monday through Friday, excluding American and Mexican holidays, between the hours of 7:30 am and 12:30 pm, and we can start you on your way.  When you come in, please bring the following items with you to save time:

- Your current passport;
- Two recent photos, taken within the last 6 months, that are 5 cm x 5 cm
(Note:  Don’t ask for “passport size”—they will be too small);
- $55 dollars for adults (over the age of 16), $70 for children;

For the truly prepared, you can fill out the application in advance: click here and fill in the form for a renewal passport. For the rest of you, you can fill it out at the Consulate.

Your passport will be ready in about 10 working days, and can be picked up at the Consulate.  For those of you applying in Cozumel or Cancun at the Consular Agency, please add an additional 5 working days onto this time.

Lost/Stolen Passports
If the unthinkable happens and your passport is lost or stolen, never fear. Come in and see us during the same hours, or if it is an emergency and after hours, call us on 044-999-947-2285, and we will replace your passport as quickly as possible. We can’t replace a passport on the weekend, but if you are traveling immediately, we can tell you how to proceed. Bring the following items with you when you come in:
- An identity document, like a driver’s license or state-issued ID, or your FM-2 or FM-3
- An expired passport, if that is available
- if not, Your birth certificate or other document showing your citizenship
- A police report on the loss or theft of the passport
- Two recent photos, 5 cm x 5 cm
- $85 dollars for an adult passport or $70 for a child’s passport

A replacement passport can be issued the same day in an emergency (expect on weekends); if travel isn’t imminent, it will arrive within 10 business days.
