The Art of Change

It's about time...and space, and the changes that affect our lives. Soho Galleries asked artists from Cuba, Mexico, and the US for their interpretations of change, and the response has been overwhelming. Artists that will be on display include Roberto Diago, Eduardo Abela (both of whom are currently on display in the Bellas Artes Museum in Havana), Frank Martinez, Kadir Lopez, Kelvin Lopez, Carlos Camero, Ernesto Villanueva, Raciel Gomez, Ballart (all the foregoing are from Cuba), David Reed (American artist living in Mérida), and Samuel Barrera (native Yucatecan). In addition, they are featuring a collection of whimsical clocks by American artist David Scherer.

Roberto Diago is known throughout the globe. His work provides a face and voice to the central motive of his work: the Black experience and manifestation in Cuban society. The result is Arte Povera lying somewhere between the gallery and social work, a criticism of the values of consumer society.

Eduardo Abela is a prominent name in Cuban art, not only because of his popularity, but also because of his lineage. His grandfather was one of the most famous Cuban artists. Each generation of Abela, however, has his own style. Although he is young, Abela’s work is already hanging in the Bellas Artes Museum. Eduardo will be flying in for the opening on May 21st.

Soho Galleries, open since November 2008, has become known for its exposure of well-known Cuban artists, its showcasing of talented young local artists, and the stunning digital photography of Nicholas Lavroff, displayed in three different spaces. The show "The Art of Change" opens May 21 (inauguration at 7 pm) and runs through August. The following Cuban artists will be attending the show on May 21: Eduardo Abela, Kadir Lopez, Ernesto Villanueva, Carlos Camero, Raciel Gomez Golpe. Also attending will be David Reed (US) and Samuel Barrera (Mérida). Hours: 10:30 am to 6:30 pm Monday-Friday, 10:30 am to 2 pm Saturdays, closed Sundays. Calle 60 No. 400A x 41 y 43.
