Going to language school in Merida

Hi. I know this is not the perfect place to ask this question, but it's the closest I can find in the Forum section of the Web site.

I am a 50-something man who plans to go to Spanish language school at the intermediate level for 6 to 8 weeks this fall in Merida.

Does anyone have an opinion on which school might suit me best? I am a serious student, but of course enjoy having fun and enjoy people of all ages and backgrounds. I prefer to be at a school near el centro.

Thanks!

Available Employment In Merida or surrounding areas

Hello.

My fiance and I desire to relocate to the lovely area of Merida. We are in our early 40's and are not financially in a position to retire, therefore we are attempting to find employment opportunities. We have 20 years experience in the Consumer Packaged Goods, manufacturing, quality, marketing, sales, and have an entrepreneurial spirit. Any recommendations / suggestions would be very much welcomed.

Thank you.

Are you looking for reliable carpentry work done

We are planning on coming to live in the Progresso area within the next 6 mths. With many years of experience with woodworking is there anyone who would need work done on their homes. Kitchen cupboards, furniture built etc. We would love to hear from those who have been looking for someone who is honest, has integrity and will always be there to get the job done when they say they will. Without taking anything away from the locals for the expert work they do, our goal is to be able to tap into the north american market who is looking for the little extra touch we can bring.

re. employment / work

To all of those who have posted questions about working in Yucatan: Please bear in mind that foreigners cannot be employed in, or work, in Mexico without either forming their own company (thereby being self-employed; but this involves lots of paperwork and many fees and taxes) or having a Mexican employer obtain a work permit for you (not so easy to get). Obviously the reason is not to take work away from qualified Mexican citizens.

Working in the Yucatan

Only 2 comments so far and since I didn't give a lot of info their comments are more for people on pensions then those in their late 40's.

We are wishing to live along the gulf where our friends have beach house we will be renting for a while.

Love to hear more from you on this matters

employment/work

We would never wish to take away from the qualified mexican citizens, but after visiting your area have talked with many expats who just can't find someone who has the tools or qualifications in the progresso area to make custom furniture that they request.
We have only the utmost respect for all the citizens of the Yucatan and in no way would come to your area and take away work that can be done by the locals. But feel we could help train and employee willing bodies who wish to learn this trade of custom building.
thanks

Live in caretaker.

Hello
Happy 2011
My name is Lettie Garcia, I'm a Mexican Citizen 44 year old lady, living at the moment in Sonora by the sea of Cortez and looking forward to moving to Yucatan area.
I spend 22 years of my life living in Massachusetts, U.S.
I'm educated, clean, know about gardening and have experience in Inn Keeping and property-keeping/pet sitting and I'm an excellent hostess.
I have excellent references from U.S. as well as from Mexico
My understanding is that you will want me to rent your home to other people for $400/Mo. USD, not myself, am I right...??
If so, are you sending the renters or do you have an agency renting your place or do you want someone to do marketing as well..??
Please write to me if you still interested and looking for the right person
My E-mail: lettie_gap@msn.com
Cheers and best regards for 2011

Employment

I have actually had two legitimate job offers as a nurse in Merida. The pay is so low it is sad! I am instead searching for a good volunteer medical opportunity. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

re. employment

Contact Dra. Irene Rivas, she owns a low-budget nursing home for dementia and parkinsons patients. Tel. 920-0902. She speaks English, tell her Juanita Stein sent you...she looked after my father for 2 years who had alzheimers, she and her staff do an amazing job but she keeps the rates low in order to be accessible to lower income families. I'm sure she could use an extra pair of hands.

Transcription

I have a small business in the States, typing up transcription of meetings, interviews, dictation, court proceedings, etc from audio tapes. (I was a paralegal for 14 yrs but like working for myself.) Does anyone think there would be a market in Merida for this transcription/typing service in the English-speaking community?
