Arriving to Cancún and want to get to Mérida?
How to get to Mérida from Cancún: If you are renting a car you do not have to worry since all the car rentals are at Cancún International Airport (CUN). Check our Yucatán map to get a general idea of your drive to Mérida that should take about 4 hours. We do recommend taking the highway one way to save time if you wish, and the freeway back to be able to go through all the villages and get a glimpse of what Mayan people and their villages are like.
If you are taking the bus to Mérida it all starts when you leave the airport in Cancún and walk all the way to the right end where you take a bus for $50 pesos into the downtown bus station. This bus runs every hour and takes about 35 minutes. For up-to-date information click here. There are 3 levels of service: super luxury "Platino" for 438 pesos, luxury "GL" for 334 pesos, and first class for 268 pesos. There are plenty of buses coming and going all the time, so if it's not high season you do not need reservations. Visit http://www.ado.com.mx/ for schedules, choosing Cancun Q Roo as the Origen and Merida CAME as the Destino. THERE IS ALSO A BUS DIRECTLY FROM THE CANCUN AIRPORT TO THE FIESTA AMERICANA HOTEL IN MERIDA. It only operates once or twice a day, so visit http://www.ado.com.mx/ to check the schedule on your travel date. Be sure to choose Cancun Aeropuerto and Merida Fiesta Americana as the Origen and Destino WITH YOUR EXACT DATE. The price is 464 pesos and it takes 4 and a half hours. You can reserve and purchase the tickets on that website. Or, there is an ADO ticket booth in all 3 Cancun airport terminals for ticket purchase, and the bus circulates to all three terminals to pick up passengers. (Note: you can also fly between Cancun and Merida; MayAir has 2 nonstop flights per day.)
ADO CANCUN AIRPORT SHUTTLE
Morning departures from Mérida airport (5.45 am and 9.30 am), Fiesta Americana (6.15 am and 10 am), and Altabrisa (6.45 am and 10.30 am). 1 pm departure from Cancun airport Thur.-Tue. Driving from Cancun to Progresso
Is there detailed directions from Cancun to Progresso anywhere?
What is the best route? Toll road or scenic route?
Cancun to Progreso
From Cancun, follow the signs to Merida and take the toll road (cuota) which is a divided highway. Total cost of the tolls is 338 pesos. It's about 300 km. (180 miles). When you get to the outskirts of Merida, follow the signs to Progreso. The highway is free but is also an excellent divided highway. The distance is about 30 km. (18 miles). Better to fly or take bus from Cancun to Merida
Hi,
We are flying from Toronto direct to Cancun and planned to take the bus to Merida - because we originally thought that was the best way and would avoid having to take a small plane into Merida. However, I understand that Merida has an "international" airport and perhaps we should try to get a flight instead. Any feedback/recommendations vis-a-vis taking the bus or flying? Thanks very much! Diane

Continental flies almost every day from Houston to Merida, it is less than a 2-hour flight, leaves Houston around 7 pm.
BETTER TO FLY OR TAKE BUS? CANCUN TO MERIDA.
Hi,
Thanks for the info on getting from Cancun to Merida. I should have been clearer. I'm flying direct into Cancun from Canada, arriving 12.45 pm. My question was about the flying conditions from Cancun to Merida - OR taking the bus. I KNOW the bus system is excellent. How is the FLYING SITUATION FROM CANCUN TO MERIDA? I'm concerned about small planes and unregulated airlines. THANKS! Diane
flying to Merida
Hi, sorry! The airline which flies this route is Mexicana Airlines, one of Mexico's 2 national carriers. Even if it is a small plane, we don't have unregulated airlines in Mexico. Here is their website: www.mexicana.com Try these numbers toll-free in Canada: 1-800-531-3585 or 1 877-801-2010 (or check your Yellow Pages for their number). So it will all depend on cost and timing...you already know the costs for the bus from the article above...from Cancun airport to the bus depot to Merida will add up to about 6 hours. The flight takes about an hour but there is only one a day (at 5 pm I think) so the connection may not work for you, and obviously it will cost a great deal more. Good luck!
Progreso
Does anyone know if I can rent a car in Progreso? I will be going to Chelem for 3 weeks, and am nervous to drive from Cancun.
Thanks

Merida-Cancun
Hi, I'm a Asian female plan to travel alone in mexico. Do you think it's safe.
I look at all of the options from Merida to Cancun:
1. Wayak bus (kinda private bus) ..I would like to take this one from Merida to Cancun as they will stop at Tulum and Itzchacha too but they need another traveller to operate the route.
2.I look at the flight option and found that MayAir is a low cost airline for this route. Is this airline reliable? any accident before?
3. Bus is the last option that I think about as I'm travelling alone and think that It might not be safe. Plus, I can't speak Spanish. Not sure it will be too difficult there..
Is taxi saved there.. If I take bus, then I will have to take taxi to the hotel.. that's another concern for me.
Please let me know if you have tip for getting a safe taxi.
Thank you so much for your advice.
re. merida-cancun
Hello, yes it is safe. You should take the same precautions as you would take travelling alone anywhere.
I have never heard of the Wayak bus!
Mayair is a good option, we have not heard of any safety issues or accidents.
But the bus is much less expensive and perfectly safe. The buses are quite deluxe and not speaking Spanish should not be a problem.
You could also hire a private driver...I suggest Canadian Ralf Hollman of http://lawsonsdriving.blogspot.com/p/what-is-william-lawsons-personal.ht... who is knowledgeable, reliable, and fun.
You can hail a taxi anywhere in Yucatan, we don't have a problem with crime from taxi drivers.

Car rental/driving from Cancun to Progresso
We are heading to a villa in Progreso in January 12. Flight arrives around lunchtime. Can you give us an idea of which car rental agency to use at the airport (or other) and thoughts on the route we should take and any other cautions, please. We are still trying to decide which way is best, flying directly to Merida or to Cancun with some sort of connection to Progreso. Also, do we need special insurance to drive in Mexico?
Thanks so much!
Car rental/driving from Cancun to Progresso
Hola Carpey, first you have to make a decision if you will fly into Merida or Cancun. Cancun flights are usually a lot cheaper but you have to drive about 4 or 4.5 hours to get to Progreso on a toll road that is very safe and costs about 30 us dollars each way. If you fly into Merida you will drive about 40 min. to Progreso on a free way. All companies are the same, so hire one you trust, they are mostly international (Avis, Hertz, National...). About the insurance for driving I do not know, but it should be the same internationally, ask your rental. Our roads are safe, you should not have any trouble. I recommend sending an email to the companies in the following link and see how gives you the best deal. http://yucatantoday.com/en/topics/car-rentals
Happy Travels!
travel cancun to progreso
By the time we get to Cancun we are tired and take the ADO bus available at the airport. It is also available at the bus station in Cancun opposite the Caribe Hotel. We have taken a car and it is very expensive, having done it with a Cancun Company and also from Merida with Avi but more reasonable. Avis will let you use the insurance on your credit card but will not inform you of the risk you are taking by doing so. If you use the insurance on your credit card to avoid the rental insurance, be aware that in Mexico an accident or event must be resolved at the scene and blame is decided by the police officer on site. You cannot get an American adjustor to come to the site and it is hard to even get a translator. This is how foreigners get fleeced and why it always the person who does not speak Spanish who gets blamed. The alternative to denying responsibility and paying the demand is time in jail. Not a lot of leeway here.
TICKETBUS/ADO
when i clicked on your link for the buses like ticketbus/ado links: www.ticketbus.com.mx they are all in spanish and no english translation. i can't see the schedules or prices. do you have any link for the website that is in english? can you recommend any shuttle/private transportation from cancun to chichen itza?
thanks
re. ticketbus/ado
Yes, it is all in Spanish. Just enter Cancun QRoo (De donde sales?) and Chichen Itza (A donde vas?) and Viaje sencillo for one way, then enter the date (up to one month in advance only). Then choose manana (morning) tarde (afternoon) or noche (night).

booking in advance
Hi,
Is it absolutley necessary to book the Cancun airport to Merida bus in advance if you are traveling in February, or will tickets be available if i just wait and buy them when i arrive, midweek, at the Cancun airport?
Thanks!
Susan
re. booking in advance
Most people probably don't book them in advance.
