A View From La Playa

By Gil Beyer

This is my fifth visit to the Yucatán over the past seven years. I've only been here a few weeks so far but I've noted some anomalies that give me pause. I'm starting to think that there may be something to the Mayan tradition that says that December 2012 will change the world as we know it.

Bicycling the Yucatán

By John M. Grimsrud

From the Puuc hills to the extensive coast of Yucatán, there are thousands of kilometers of paved quiet outback roads through countless Mayan villages interspersed with colonial haciendas and ancient Mayan ruins, all there just waiting for your visit.

Bicycle excursions are by far the most inexpensive you will ever take and can be the most rewarding in not only health benefits, but also the most memorable experiences of your lives.

In the Silent City

By Anna Sunderland Kudsk, Iowa native who has lived in Mérida for 2 years

Today is viernes de Luto. Friday of mourning.
The Poetry of Place

By Doug Tanoury

I have always felt that there is a special poetry of place. A certain color, light and shadow that is totally unique. The rooftop garden at Hotel Casa Mexilio is a lovely poetic place in Mérida to sit, have a beer and gaze out at the night lights of the city under a star filled sky. What is equally magical is the journey itself, for to get to the rooftop garden, you must climb serpentine stairways and cross narrow catwalks above tropical trees and vines and over a cenote-like pool.

Patron Saint
By Doug Tanoury

I found a wooden Santo in an antique shop, without hands and it called to mind a passage from the New Testament, where Jesus encourages that offending eyes be plucked out and tempting hands be severed by their owners.

This Santo with tempting hands removed and paint peeling from his clothes was keeping the company of sinners who owned the shop and other lesser Santos with both hands still attached, so I asked: "¿cuánto es este santo?" The shop owner thought for a moment and slowly replied: "tres mil quinientos".

La Bici Ruta

Every Sunday from 8 AM to 12:30 PM more than 5 kilometers of roads in Merida are closed off to traffic (east to west streets do have traffic so you must follow traffic rules and obey the stop lights) allowing cyclists to enjoy a morning of bicycling in a family-oriented ambiance that is healthy and safe. The Bici-Ruta runs from La Ermita de Santa Isabel (the square block bordered by Calles 77, 66, 79, and 64A in Centro), north to the San Juan Park, continues north to the Main Plaza, up Calle 60, then north along the Paseo Montejo to the fountain by Burger King. You can get onto the Bici-Ruta at any point.

There are 4 places to rent bicycles: outside the Palacio Municipal on Calle 60 x 61, at Parque Santa Lucía on Calle 60 x 55, on Paseo de Montejo at Calle 37 beside the Monumento Felipe Carrillo Puerto, and at Monumento a la Patria. It costs 10 pesos per hour. There are bike parking areas in various places, but the bikes do not come with locks and chains, so if you plan on doing any stops whatsoever, you would need to bring your own.
