Cenote Peba
A new cenote excursion

On our cover this month we show the semi-open cenote of Peba. This cenote is one of the two cenotes that are visited on the Snorkel in Cenotes excursion.

Mayan Ecotours is a relatively young company that offers responsible ecotourism and adventure options. Their goal to show their clients the natural and cultural riches of the Yucatan in a safe, protecting-the-natural-environment-manner while giving personalized attention.

With specialized guides they practice responsible tourism. Their vision is to develop sustainable tourism options by including the Mayan people from villages that are in and around the places they visit.
Mayan Ecotours offers scuba diving, snorkel, kayack and rappel tours with visits to haciendas, cenotes, Chichen Itza, Izamal, Celestun, the Puuc Route, Mayapan and Uxmal.

Their new trip is called Snorkel in Cenotes (sinkholes) and includes snorkeling in two cenotes, hotel pick-up and drop-off, a bi-lingual guide (English/Spanish) who is an EMT trained rescue diver, snorkel equipment, life jacket, visit to a Mayan village where they hand-weave bags, hats, etc. in open caves, then lunch at the colonial 18th century Hacienda Ochil.

The cenote in the picture is the cenote at Peba, the second cenote on the tour. A majestic stone staircase made by the ancient Mayans allows you to enter this cenote oh-so-easily! On the stone walls of the cenote you will see seashell fossils. They will surely get you thinking as to how they got there being so far inland! Snorkeling in the refreshing, crystalline waters will certainly be a highlight of your trip to Yucatan. If you are unsure of your snorkeling skills, the guides are ever so helpful and will even hold your hand.

The first cenote you will visit is the larger cenote Kankiriche. Entrance into this cenote is down a metal ladder. Once again, the crystalline waters will make your snorkeling and swimming time so special.
For this tour, remember to take your bathing suit, towel and camera. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes.

The cost of this spectacular trip is $550 pesos per person and includes everything except beverages at the Hacienda Ochil.
If you have computer access, take a look at www.mayanecotours.com and click on cenotes. While the site is just in Spanish at this point, the pictures say a thousand words in any language.
