As your private car approaches the ranch, you have no idea of what to expect. Turning a corner, the first thing you see is two Maya women, dressed in huipiles, sitting under the trees and cooking fresh, handmade tortillas. When you step out of the car, as your senses take in the peace and quiet of the setting, you notice a rustic table set with everything you will need for your feast, in the shade of large trees with birds singing overhead. Before you take a step, another huipil-clad Maya woman welcomes you with a tray of ice-cold wet cloths, scented with mint, to refresh your hands and face.
The property includes three fairly large open cenotes: the first, right at the ranch, is ideal for swimming and snorkelling; the second is used for diving and is famous for its stalactite forest which decorates its interior; and the third is home to a large number of birds, ideal for those who want to plan intense observation sessions, preferably at dawn or dusk. All three cenotes are accessible on foot, bicycle, or rappel.
This is only one of many very special places on the tours offered by Catherwood Travels. You can follow in the footsteps of explorers John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood, with your archaeologist guide, as you discover the Maya world. Venture into the underworld of caves and cenotes while meeting gifted artisans and Yucatán’s friendly people. Enjoy the comfort of travel in a private, chauffeured vehicle as you step back in time, pampered during your stay at a luxurious hacienda. Gain exclusive access to hidden natural wonders and relax in extraordinary settings.
Catherwood Travels’ tours are known for their attention to detail. Itineraries are custom designed. They provide archaeologists, hosts, or experts to lead your group, and on-tour lunches and fête-champêtre-style picnics in amazing private ranches, haciendas, and other exclusive settings.
